Movie Reviews

Newsweek - 8/10 by David AnsenThe young Dillon effortlessly portrays the thuggish Richie, and Kramer is believable as the misunderstood kid turned miscreant. Add a pulsating soundtrack featuring the Ramones, Van Halen, and Cheap Trick, and you have a vibrant depiction of confused teen life.
Chicago Sun-Times - 8/10 by Roger EbertOver the Edge is a funeral service held at the graveside of the suburban dream. It tells a ragged story that ends with an improbable climax, but it's acted so well and truly by its mostly teen-age cast that we somehow feel we're eavesdropping.
The Globe and Mail (Toronto) - 8/10 by Jay ScottA lot of Over the Edge is awkwardly acted and motivated, but it is staged with such vivid efficiency and concern that, as you watch it, you are frequently caught halfway between a giggle and a gasp.
New York Times - 8/10 by Vincent CanbyIt's to Mr. Kaplan's credit that he makes New Granada look just as boring and alienating to us as it does to the unfortunate children who live there.
Boston Globe - 7/10 by Bruce McCabeJonathan Kaplan's Over the Edge is a sensitive and deceptively shocking portrait of middle-class decadence and alienation set against an impersonal, dehumanized, futuristic Sunbelt society.
Chicago Reader - 6/10 by Dave KehrPart wish fulfillment and part social moralizing, the film never resolves its point of view, but a few of the apocalyptic images stay in the mind.
Time Out - 6/10 by Geoff AndrewScript, photography and performances (including Dillon before he decided to become a teenage Stallone) are all top notch, while Kaplan directs with pace, imagination, and a fine ear for dialogue and music.
User Review - 10/10 by Dru YTeenage angst in suburbia. This is how kids really feel. Alienated, thrill seeking, bored, apathetic. Reminds me of the town I grew up in.
User Review - 10/10 by Cozette FAbsolutely my favorite movie of all time!
User Review - 10/10 by Jeff BAn overlooked gem in the 70's but now is a cult classic. May be harder to find, because of the format change, Warner Brothers hasn't released this on Blu-Ray to my knowledge as of yet. Since I grew up in a similar situation in So. Cal. I completely relate to the kids in the movie and the impact was stronger at the time. Still worth the watch today because teens still have some of the same problems and adults don't always see or care about them. The end result may be a bit over the top but the movie still holds up today.
