Movie Reviews

4:3 - 8/10 by Conor BatemanOnly The Dead lacks a consistent self-reflexivity, coming across as a hybrid of simplistic narrative account of the war and personal diary.
Matt's Movie Reviews - 8/10 by Matthew PejkovicMuch is learned from Ware's words of haunted experience, mostly that while war is indeed destructive, it can also plant seeds for even more rotten fruit to grow.
3AW - 8/10 by Jim SchembriAbsolutely outstanding, piercing documentary about the war in Iraq pieced together by Australian war correspondent Michael Ware from the seven years' worth of camcorder footage he took... Easily one of the best accounts of the war so far.
Guardian - 8/10 by Wendy IdeThere are scenes here that you can't unsee, much as you might want to.
Film Experience - 7/10 by Glenn DunksGiven this is assembled mostly from his own war correspondents videos, Ware is at the centre of most of the footage and your response to the film will largely depend on your response to him and his true blue blokey personality.
The Age (Australia) - 7/10 by Philippa HawkerThere are occasions when more information or sustained introspection feels necessary, but there also times when images speak for themselves.
Total Film - 6/10 by Neil SmithThis visceral, harrowing distillation of Wares seven years on the front line may not break any new ground. But it certainly brings that chaos to life ...
User Review - 10/10 by Jared MA brutal in your face account of our occupation of Iraq.
User Review - 10/10 by Greg RAn amazing HBO documentary, so accurately portraying the war.
User Review - 10/10 by Andy BOne of Australia's finest films, documentary or TV shows ever produced, I was stunned. Within the first few minutes i was hooked and was unable to take my eyes away from the screen. This man spent 7 years all up in the Middle East, he arrived 3 days before the US invaded Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein. Almost immediately upon arrival he almost dies. Since that first experience, he rightly should have died hundreds of times. He as at very forefront of the invasion every-time. As a Journalist working for TIME magazine, he was there obviously to cover the war. But whilst there he encountered a "Dark place inside himself." He became fascinated by the brutality of both sides, the Suicide bombers and the men who sent them to their deaths. As a reporter he is impartial and meant to be off limits to both sides to attack. After asking around for a while about meeting some of the members of this Guerrilla resistance now known as ISIS, He began to gain their trust, slowly but surely they let him into their circles and allowed him to film, soon he was asked to partake in attacks to prove himself. One day, he receives a tape via a messenger telling him to "Give this to the insurgents" the tape containing be headings, suicide bombings and all other manner of things, he begins to become obsessed with how these people could do such things. He gets in deeper and deeper until he is as far as he can get. All of this unfolds right before your eyes. WARNING - This is one of the most graphic docos i have ever seen. Do not watch it if you easily sickened. You really need a strong stomach for it. 9.2/10 Stars!
