User Review - 10/10 by Marc-Daniel Oget past the translation and you have yourself a great movie!
User Review - 10/10 by George CLets face it, the glory days of our Hong Kong action heroes such as Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Jet Lee and such are gone... Heck, they don't even make them the same anymore, with each new film becoming more and more Hollywood-ised which was part of the reason we loved them in the first place - gritty originality! And with respect to all my heroes, it is nice to see a host of them standing proud alongside the next generation of action stars - namely, the handsome Philip Ng and Andy On. Once Upon A Time In Shanghai brings these great 2 talents together under the wing of the fantastic Wong Jing, amazing Yuen Woo Ping and many more to give us an epic martial arts feature! Sharing the screen is the always incredible Sammo Hung, Yuen Cheung Yan, Chen Kwan Tai to name but a few, each gaining a bout of screen action without ever stealing the limelight from the ass kicking Philip Ng. Beautifully shot and directed, simple and hard hitting, OUATIS is worthy of a place in any kung fu film fans collection!!
User Review - 10/10 by Bilal SIMPRESSIVE. too much praise so, philip ng is a++! seamless acting, badass fight skills! yeun woo ping choreography ages like fine wine! so stylish, don't close your eyes!! cinematography is breathtaking, touching, funny, timeless, LOVE it!
User Review - 8/10 by George INice old-school beat 'em up flick with brief but welcome performances from Sammo Hung, Chen Quan Tai, Yuen Wo Ping, and some other dude who looks familiar, but whose name I don't know. Written and directed by Wong Jing.
User Review - 8/10 by Jesse OThis movie is pretty much a homage to Bruce Lee, the main character Ma Yongzhen has the same clothing, humble beginnings, awesome at martial arts, same haircut, and injuries in Lee's famous movies. The simple peasant is too good at fighting, and sent to 1900's Shanghai in order to live there. Along the way, he meets a retired kung fu master and courts his daughter, and also befriends a fierce but loyal rising crime lord. The story is rather basic, but the its the tense music combined with Woo Ping Yuen's fight choreography that really steals the show. The scenes are violent and intense, with solid cinematography to back everything up. Andy On isn't the main star or villain, but he steals the show as the rival who turns into a loyal friend. Once Upon a Time in Shanghai has a weird colour palette that sets the mood, for this fight filled martial arts homage gem.
User Review - 6/10 by Tavip TNot much star power in Bruce Lee wanna-be, but he's a good fighter though.
User Review - 6/10 by Alejandro RSeemed like a homage to old Bruce Lee movies done in Sin City or 300 (comic book-ish) movie style.
User Review - 4/10 by Luciano GAlthough ONCE UPON A TIME IN SHANGHAI doesn't exactly lives up to its fullest potential, the movie is nevertheless a fairly engaging old-school martial arts movie worth watching for....
User Review - 4/10 by Conrad TTried too hard to have some romantic feel in a fight movie. Imitate Dick Tracey.
User Review - 4/10 by Kevin RDon't tell a lonesome person how lonely he is. A young man moves to Shanghai because he believes it will be an opportunity to get rich and be able to provide for his family. Unfortunately, he finds the underground tough and quickly has to resort to violence to survive, let alone make a living. Living life this fast and brutal may lead to his and his family's demise... "Young lads are still rushing in by the thousands." Ching-Po Wong, director of Revenge: A Love Story, Triad Underworld, Mob Sister, A Decade of Love, and Let's Go, delivers Once Upon a Time in Shanghai. The storyline for this picture is okay and fairly straightforward. The action scenes are inconsistent and rely on CGI a bit too much. The acting is okay for the genre and the cast includes Sammo Hung, Any On, and Philip Ng. "A kiss is not enough for me; I want to fly high with you..." I came across this on Netflix and added it to my queue. I am a fan of these martial arts films for the most part and was disappointed by this picture. There were some great fight scenes but there were some very bad ones as well. The overall picture is below average due to the overuse of CGI and some cheesy scenes. I'd recommend skipping this. "I will take care of you from now on. Our lives will get better." Grade: C-
