Bart Hughes has a pretty good life, a beautiful wife, a young son, a good job with promotion prospects, and a renovated brownstone in New York. When wife and kid leave for a vacation, Bart stays behind to work on a project that will earn him that promotion, unaware that a certain inhabitant of his basement has other plans for his time. Bart goes a bit bonkers trying to kill this rat, destroying most of his house in the process. Certain allegorical elements tie the household conflict to the "rat race" in his office, but the main event is certainly the night-and-day contest of wills between man and rodent.

Movie Reviews

Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 6/10 by Dennis SchwartzToo close to home for the extreme rat phobia explored not to sink in as much as possible as scary stuff.
Los Angeles Times - 6/10 by Susan KingThe comic possibilities of this are generally ignored in Brian Taggert's screenplay and the direction of George P. Cosmatos, which features about as many shots from the point of view of the rat as of Bart Hughes.
Reel Film Reviews - 4/10 by David NusairIt's ultimately clear that Of Unknown Origin might've worked as a half hour short yet is simply unable to sustain an 88 minute running time...
User Review - 10/10 by Erika ABEST MAN vs. GIANT RAT MOVIE FROM THE 80s EVER MADE!!
User Review - 10/10 by Brian PPeter Weller (Robocop to you and me) versus a big rat that's moved into his nice apartment. It's a cool, effective little movie.
User Review - 10/10 by Jerry LPeter Weller plays a high power business guy who has a rat in his townhouse. A townhouse that he lovingly restored himself by hand. Only this is no ordinary rat. A must see! Wow. One of my new favorites.
User Review - 10/10 by James BI loved this movie and feel it a must see no matter what genre you are into. On the surface this is your basic man versus beast tale but with a twist on the theme I have never seen. On a deeper level the movie dives into the main characters head an allows you to share his fears, anger, and triumph.
User Review - 8/10 by Tico PI remember seeing this on HBO when I was about 8 or 9 years old and it scared the living crap out of me. I was terrified of rats for years after watching this movie. The film does drag in the middle big time and it would have made an awesome episode of Tales from the Crpyt. Peter Weller is terrorized by a giant rat that has movied into his new place while the wife is away. He tries to capture the monster but he eventually must play by it's rules and get mean. This is worth watching because it gives a desperate feel of man vs. beast like in Jaws.
User Review - 8/10 by Bobby GRobocop turns himself into a black metal Captain Ahab in order to defeat a ROUS!
User Review - 8/10 by Brett BPeter Weller versus an abnormally-large, hyper-intelligent, killer rat? What's not to like? OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN is a big chunk of tasty '80s cheese, well-directed by B-movie veteran Cosmatos. The movie treats the subject matter seriously, but yet still finds a way to have fun with it, primarily through some wonderful, squirm-inducing moments and a terrific leading performance from Weller, who dives right in with his character's progression from mildly irritated, to harried, to at his wit's end; the script also gives him dialogue that's sharp, witty, and full of personality, and he brings a real undercurrent of dry humor to the story. As for his villainous rodent nemesis, the movie employs - for the most part - some great, up-close photography of an actual rat, and as hard as it may be to believe, the movie manages to make this critter a credible threat to Weller's physical and mental well-being. This is a film whose premise has (more or less) been done many times, and it could have easily been boring, outlandish schlock, but Cosmatos and company keep things on the track at all points. OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN does exactly what good, mid-level genre should: populate the story with intelligent characters, include a healthy sense of humor, and make a ridiculous premise compelling through inventive staging and effective suspense. It does run on just a little bit long, but it's completely entertaining for the duration, and in a refreshingly un-ironic way.
