rec.arts.movies.reviewsBob BloomSometimes a movie comes along that is so special, so out of the ordinary that you want to embrace it as tightly as a long-lost relative.
Urban CinefileUrban Cinefile CriticsRenée Zellweger pulls this picture out of the potential story mire, handsomely assisted by Kinnear, Morgan and Rock, taking us on a wild and funny ride in the backseat of her fantasy.
rec.arts.movies.reviewsMichael DequinaThis being LaBute, this is an atypical fairy tale story made even more so through the filter of a decidedly dark lens--and the film would not be quite the subversively funny and all-around memorable entertainment that it is without him.
CompuserveHarvey S. KartenI left stunned by the movie's perfect combination of crackerjack acting, clever writing, sharp cross-cutting of scenes.

Cinema SignalsJules BrennerCarried by Renee Zellweger whose particular forte is unquestioned honesty, directness and guilelessness, supported by no less than Morgan Freeman in a semi-comedic turn and Chris Rock in a semi-serious turn, it's a rare entertainment.
Montreal Film JournalKevin N. LaforestRenee Zellwegger is the real star here, of course, and Greg Kinnear is very enjoyable too, but it's Chris Rock and Morgan Freeman that really won me over.
Rolling StonePeter TraversHe (LaBute) pulls the farce and the violence and the fantasies together with a deft touch and a sweetness rare in American films -- especially his.
Entertainment WeeklyLisa SchwarzbaumThe superb screenplay won an award at Cannes this year for good reason.
