Full Plot Details

In 1983, Oliver Nicholas, at thirteen, is well-poised to enter the precocious teenage world of first-sex, vodka and possible-love in New York City when he is traumatized by the stroke of his housekeeper (and only true maternal figure), a sixty-five-year-old Chilean woman named Aida. What was supposed to be an exhilarating and somewhat fearful rite of passage - diving into the exciting, fast-paced world of first experiences - quickly becomes skewed by an incomprehensible depression, and a house of interior horrors. Surrounded by women - his untraditional, Spanish, photographer mother (more interested in the role of confidante than mother) his sister, a comedic, door-slamming tormentor, marked by her parent's divorce; and Aida, his silver-haired emotional focal point on the verge of death in Lenox Hill Hospital - Oliver struggles to maintain his role as "man of the house" and his sanity. With his best friends, Nicholas Pinto, Raul Pinto, Valerio, a chain-smoking, nunchucking, grandiose artist; and Nick, a cynical, foul-mouthed, jokester, Oliver struggles through attacks of mania, drunkenness, first love, betrayal, migraine-inducing masturbation, virginity, and the loss of an imaginary friend . . . hoping to survive this uniquely-New-York baptism by fire.

Film Threat - 6/10 by Mark BellSure, there's nothing new to the rebellion and acting out that comes with puberty and growing older, but by framing it within the scope of this particular familial structure, it allows the film to be more than just your typical coming-of-age drama.
User Review - 8/10 by Phil CSometimes the most enjoyable movies come from the random watching. I truly loved this movie. The story was a very typical coming of age tale but with the background of NYC kid in the early 80's dealing with the inevitable loss of his nanny. Explained in the movie Oliver is much more closer to his Spanish live in nanny than his own mother. I felt the relationship between all characters was perfectly executed thanks to the acting by the main cast. Following this kid as he makes his way though hormone filled rebellionious attitude of 13. My 13 was nothing like his tho the actions are different the emotions remain the same. Great Direction and cinematography. Has rewatch value IMO.

User Review - 4/10 by Carlos LAn different, unusual, and adult film about a 13 year old growing up and dealing with the potential of his nanny passing away. He also smokes, makes out with girls, drinks alcohol (and gets drunk), masturbates, steals things, starts fights, and has sex. I like that it's so adult at times, but it tends to focus a bit too much on the Nanny storyline and gets bogged down in melodrama too often. That said, this film is notable for being a more adult look at a young boy just starting to go through adolescence.
