Doris is surprised to see a gaggle of women hanging back that she doesn't know at the graveside service. Donald's recent past is then told in flashback, a secret part of it a life of opening himself up sexually to other women whenever the opportunity arose. He and Doris never married for love, but rather in an effort to prove to themselves and to the world that they were "normal". As such, their marriage was a passionateless one, both physically and emotionally. As Donald approached age fifty, a relatively new situation in his life made him want to experience true love for the first time, which led to this disparate group of women entering it in one facet or another. Only his aged friend Theo, who often hung out with him while he did his work in the park, knew Donald's goal and the extent of his secret life. The question becomes if Donald was able to find that true love he so desired before his passing.
