The SpectatorPenelope HoustonEven the film's few satirical thoughts, though, are left dimly trailing in its curdled mixture of would-be sophisticated larking and kindergarten political caricature.
User ReviewKyle ZI can't believe I hadn't seen it until now.
User ReviewSean CA massive spit in the face to rampant American imperialism and is full of absurdities and surreal battles as American superhero Mr. Freedom takes on the vile Red China Man and Moujik Man. Political and politically incorrect, it's hard to believe William Klein's film isn't more widely discussed or given the attention it so rightfully deserves. Antifreedomism is at an all time high!
User ReviewJosh JThe uproarious absurdity of this live-action cartoon, with its eye-popping pop art visuals and scene after scene of ludicrous satire, is so up my alley that I don't even care if it's the most America-bashing film ever made.
User ReviewJean-Marie LWild and over-the-top, but as such a just response to the great bulk of American culture (not to mention the even worse reality beneath the cultural trash heap).
User ReviewDavid JVery funny film, great spoof on American imperialism, but unduly harsh on the notion of freedom.
User ReviewAdam PAn idiotic patriotic American superhero fights surreal Commie villains and rioting Frenchmen in Paris. It's not exactly a subtle satire, but the parodied ultimate right-wing views make this a sheer delight.
User ReviewTodd HA well-deserved takedown (or smashdown or whatever you want to call it) of the right wing of America in the 1960s. It does go overboard, and the joke does get a bit old before the end. But William Klein is a surprisingly talented filmmaker, and the "extremeness" of it all makes it very much worth watching. A highly memorable film.
User ReviewZachary PReading the other reviews, someone said the movie is like Team America and someone else said it was loudly overdone, like, I guess we could say, Team America is. But what is to be appreciated is, what other loudly overdone satire can you think of in this period. Yes, all art-films of this period had social/cultural critiques. But often they were on a personal or metaphorical or plane smaller level. Klein makes it loud like American pretensions are loud, and it makes sense to me.
