The SpectatorPenelope HoustonLike Au Hasard, Balthazar, Mouchette is a deeply pessimistic film which somehow leaves one in a mood close to exhilaration.
Village VoiceJ. HobermanLike any genius, Bresson made rules in order to break them.
Time OutWally HammondA magnificent and deeply rewarding example of Bresson's stripped-down methods of cutting and framing, sound and dialogue, performance and movement.
VarietyVariety StaffEveryday incidents take on an almost spiritual intensity in Bresson's controlled and incisive direction and handling of the players. Nadine Nortier has the animal ferocity and gentleness needed for the role.
LarsenOnFilmJosh LarsenThe exquisite balance of unadorned artistry and emotional intensity that defined Au Hasard Balthazar is less skillfully balanced here.
Reeling ReviewsLaura CliffordIn "The Tree of Life," Jessica Chastain's character notes that one can go through life in one of two ways - with grace or by nature. If the doomed cleric in "Diary of a Country Priest" was the exemplar of grace, Mouchette represents nature...
Chicago ReaderDave KehrIt's a remarkable film: dark, compressed, shattering.
User ReviewPrivate UShows why we need to be nicer to each other.
User ReviewGenaro Nbleak, austere but deeply liberating. This film is about redemption but in a very bad way, by suicide? yes it is very pessimistic that the only way to reach the divine grace it is when we are dead because in life we really dont see God anywhere. Bresson put us a happy ending in the context of the film. Surely one the most uncompromising and minimalistic film I have seen. But it is also so emotional and deeply enigmatic work of art, we make the character by ourselves, all it is behind the surface, this is the thing that makes this film so special. Robert Bresson makes this film very magic with a very simple and pure image without great photography or great landscapes or acting, or twisted scripts, only by showing the little things of the human soul and the human suffering. One of the most beautiful films about depression.
User ReviewAtlas oBresson does it again with this follow up to au hasard. a bleak film about alienation, despair, and the loss of innocence.
