User ReviewVadim DIt's a little crazy how much Rita Hayworth was under-appreciated for her acting in Hollywood. She didn't just bring forth the strong, femme fatale type of attitude, but also a lot of tenderness, and it was especially evident in Miss Sadie Thompson. As I understand, the source material was heavily censored in this picture, but it's still enjoyable due to Haworth, fun musical numbers, and good story.
User ReviewJennifer BA remake of the movie 'Rain' from 1932 originally starring Joan Crawford. The plot is all about the message which is a good one to be told. I found this version easier to watch. It is spiced up with a great performance by the lovely Rita. She plays a sultry club singer who has no qualms with being stranded on an island of sailors in between trying to make it anew elsewhere, until a bible-thumper starts telling her she is an evil sinner and doesn't realize his own sins.
User ReviewTara HA third adaptation of Somerset Maugham's short story, 'Rain', with Rita Hayworth following in the hallowed footsteps of Gloria Swanson and Joan Crawford. Rita's at her fiery best during the film's musical numbers, and Jose Ferrer is creepily effective as her moral nemesis. But the original story is bowdlerised by the censorship of fifties Hollywood, and a lame romantic subplot doesn't help either.
User ReviewJames GGood film for Rita Hayworth fans, as she is particularly good in this film, as the Miss Thompson of the title, and Jose Ferrer is a nasty piece of work as a missionary with a thoroughly Old Testament (not to say mysogynistic) view of good time girls like Sadie, what ethy're worth and what they deserve. It goes into areas which Hollywood films could not address 'full on' due to the constraints of the code, doubly so in a film so outwardly sunny, but does so sufficiently for the viewer to fully understand. Interesting film.
User ReviewPaul DThere is one thing about this movie that sum up the difference in spirit and feel from its 1932 counterpart (and its silent counterpart which i haven't seen) and its not that this movie attempts very weakly to pass itself off as a musical. In the earlier films Sadie's love interest knows she is a prostitute, even if no one says it, and doesn't care. In this film Sadie's love interest thinks incorrectly that she is a prostitute and nearly walks out on her. In other words this is a whitewashed version of a story that in the past dealt with themes of obsession, perversion of morality, and religion as weapon. To smooth over Sadie's edges and even Mr. Davidson's, and to water down these themes is to remove the any life from the story. The result is a dull uninspired imitation used mostly as something to showcase Rita Hayworth in 3D, and since there isn't even that bit of spectacle anymore what's the point.
User ReviewRoman AGood actors but a very poor plot and script....I would not watch it twice.
