Film Journal InternationalDavid NohHow could such good intentions result in such an unconvincing, deadeningly obvious morass? Ask the triple-threat-against-decent-filmmaking at the forefront.
Los Angeles TimesMichael RechtshaffenAlthough Fontaine, a former soap opera actor, hits the saga's sins-of-the-fathers theme too often, there's a palpable small-town-in-transition feel to the fictional Braxton.... And there's no denying Fontaine's reflective but rumpled Rolando Ramirez is an interesting protagonist.
The New York TimesDaniel M. GoldMi America is not just about a murder case but about how residents of divided communities share a history and deal with one another, sometimes hopefully, always warily.
Village VoiceMonica CastilloFontaine, also the writer and director here, aims high and crashes spectacularly, unable to keep the Jenga tower of a story together — or from being uninteresting.
User ReviewBruno KMany great performances shed light on crimes against Hispanics and the complex web of society that perpetuates hate crimes and discrimination. As Ronaldo's past is unraveled along with the crime he is obsessed with, we wonder how Ronaldo has remained on ethical high ground. There are many nuances to the characters in this movie. Robert Fountaine has built them from news stories and personal experiences and he effectively shows us there is good and bad in all people. That perspective allows us inside a community struggling to get ahead, while weighed down by its past, which can take several generations to unravel. It is a story about immigrants, but it is also a story about ethics, love and family. Worth the price of admission.
User ReviewRahul PI saw an early private screening of this last year and it was among the best movies I saw last year. A movie that speaks about corruption in this country involving racism and a hate crime and does so with no holds barred. The subtly powerful cinematography drives the detailed plot which is top notch. The story is a slow burn but the screenplay was tight and engaging with a satisfying ending. The cast was all top notch. Robert Fontaine Jr (who also beautifully directs) deftly plays his lead character Roe and other standouts include Michael Brainard who is fully invested in his role as well as Joshua Cameron who impresses in limited time as young Roe. This film needs to be released wide for the public to see filmmaking at its finest in the same vein of Clint Eastwood's Mystic River
