On an August midday, somewhere in the remote vastness of rural Iceland, the carefree eleven-year-old, Hera, is unaware that a tragic accident will soon rob her of her last share of happiness. As a result, Hera will rebel against God with an unquenched rage, permeated with the vivid memory of her brother that pulsates in every corner of the house--and under those circumstances, alienated and suicidal--Hera will soon drag herself into a dreary, dead-end life. Years later--still blaming God for the injustice, and fending off any attempts at reconciliation from the local priest--the troubled teenager will embrace her brother's lifestyle, delving deeper and deeper into the unexplored and fascinating new music movement of Black Metal, finally finding a new purpose in life. However--with Hera still aching for closure, while the wounds of the past are always angry and wide-open--will she grasp in time that wallowing in grief can eat her up alive?

Seattle WeeklyBrian MillerBy turns scathing, wounded, and contrite, the actress conveys an atonal, akimbo soulfulness that, yes, marks her as a true daughter of the Land of Björk.
Los Angeles TimesMartin TsaiWriter-producer Ragnar Bragason renders the story only on a superficial level, developing Hera's character primarily through changes in wardrobe, hair and makeup.

User ReviewFederico EMetalhead is a wonderful film about the effects of heavy metal music on cows. Okay, it's not that at all but it is a wonderful film and the combination of heavy metal music and dairy cows does lend itself to some humourous moments in this tale of a family trying to cope with a death in the family. Young Hera, having a hard time coping with the loss of her brother, turns to something he enjoyed a lot... heavy metal music. Mom and dad? Well, they're having their own difficulties both personally and relationship wise. And while Hera finds solice in her music and teen shenanigans of a destructive nature, they can only seem to distance themselves further and further from their previously loving family. Metalhead is a beautiful telling of this family's attempts at coping and it all revolves around Hera and her metal. It just goes to show how heavy metal is not only the destroyer of worlds but the builder of bridges as well... or in this case, churches. Highly recommended if you ever get the chance to see it. It's got heart, love, hate, pain, laughter, meaning, but above all else... it has metal.
User ReviewTor MNot a metal lesson but I believe it's an ode to the genre from the director. We meet a crazy chick, dealing with her problems after her brother's horrible death. A well acted film that's always interesting with it's funny moments combined with it's pretty dark main plot. Often strange, but still very authentic. I tend to love Icelandic films since the scenery are amazing. This film got plenty of it, it's well shot and the amazing, natural lightning is something for the eye. Beautiful and dark film that I'm really glad I gave a go. 8.5 out of 10 riffs.
User ReviewChris PAlthough it doesn't look like it, this is a sensitive, moving drama about dealing with the loss of a loved one.
