User Review - 8/10 by icotzabbThis was a masterful study on memory, family, perspective, and the fragility of the human mind. Superbly shot and edited. Exceptional performances. In the end, it does fall into some predictable conventions plot wise but the journey is worth it and then some. Anyone who has been touched by degenerative mental illness will be touched by this film in a similar impactful way. This is a film that no one should miss. I just wish I had heard of it sooner, Im a little late to the party.
User Review - 8/10 by rpotter1000I picked this randomly on Netflix thinking I’d just fall asleep and forget about it. Stayed up till the middle of the night riveted! Excellent thriller. Hollywood-level production, direction, and acting, but with a nice slightly different storytelling feel. Loved the moodiness. Shocking and unsettling at times but not in cheap, showy ways like many dumbed down mainstream thrillers. But also not a boring art film by any means. Still should work for fans of typical serial killer psychological thrillers who wouldn’t think to watch a random Korean Netflix movie with subtitles. Many unexpectedly emotional moments. Really pays off with a great climax and ending.
User Review - 8/10 by Riff JA fantastic movie that has an ending that may confuse some. It took a bit of searching the net for theories before I found 1 that made sense. SPOILER: the protagonist did in fact kill the dirty cop, but because his dementia got a lot worse in the mental facility, he comes to the conclusion that he didn't kill the dirty cop and hence his mission is incomplete. So he releases himself from the facility and will now lead a life of hell (to pay for his sins) as he'll be searching obsessively for the cop, who is already dead... meaning he will die thinking he's a failure. If you a different theory PLEASE let me know by replying. I'm still not 100% certain because wouldn't he still have contact with his daughter, and wouldn't she remind him that the cop is already dead? Idk... As for a review, regardless of the tricky ending its a very interesting and entertaining movie to watch. The acting was good (the bad cop could've been a bit creepier) and the cinematography was beautiful. I'd definitely recommend this movie to horror-thriller fans, and especially those who like asian movies.
User Review - 6/10 by Alan WA former serial killer who retired 17 years ago for a quiet life with her daughter now has to save her from a new, younger serial killer as his dementia worsens. So whenever his killer instincts help him unravel the clues to figure out who the killer is, his short term memory keeps getting reset whenever it suits the narrative. This Memento-like set-up, playing up the narrator's unreliability, has great potential and there's a good deal of tension, not to mention humour, to be mined on screen in this game of cat and forgetful mouse. The main lead, Kyong-gu Sol who plays the father is suitably sinister in his quieter moments but resorts to increasing hysterics in an exaggerated style of acting common in Korean/Asian cinema that does not endear him to this audience. Nam-gil Kim, with his baby-faced charisma, plays it more ambiguous as the adversary to Sol's character. It's a pity then that the second half of the film falls into contrivances, culminating in a typically twisted and violent Korean movie ending with too many prologues - and when it finally ends, it settles on an unnecessarily ambiguous one that just feels a bit silly to me.
