Miami HeraldBill CosfordMaximum Overdrive offers a variation on what has become a hopelessly hackneyed theme -- technology as monster. As long as King is tinkering with his crazed machines, the film sustains a certain amount of ominous tension, but as soon as the author turns his attention to his actors, the movie's slender storyline goes limp. It's dreary to the max.
Video-Reviewmaster.comSteve CrumTruck stop attacked by mechanical objects, including trucks, gone awry! Based on Stephen King story.
Sin MagazineAustin KennedyStephen King has admitted himself that he was coked out of his mind during the making of this. Well... duh!
Chicago TribuneRick KoganMAXIMUM OVERDRIVE doesn't work on any level. As a comedy it's obvious and asinine, as a horror film it's simply not scary, and as an action film it's a bore.
The New York TimesJohn ParaelesFor the most part, [King] has taken a promising notion - our dependence on our machines - and turned it into one long car-crunch movie, wheezing from setups to crackups.

User ReviewJeff HUnder different circumstances, Maximum Overdrive would've gotten a 3 1/2. The humor is good, and seeing an ATM machine calling Stephen King an a*shole is hilarious. However, circumstances were that AC/DC DID THE ENTIRE SOUNDTRACK!!! Seeing an ATM machine calling Stephen King an a*shole is great, but it's SPECTACULAR BEYOND BELIEF when it's followed by AC/DC's "Who Made Who" in the credits! Stephen King directed this one, and I really wish he had directed more (Maybe with Alice Cooper? Howzabout Jimi Hendrix?). He plans the entrance of an AC/DC song perfectly, and it makes an awesome scene even awesomer. The trailer makes the movie look kind of frightening, but it's most definitely not. It even has some satire mixed in, with the blurb at the end of the movie saying that a, "Russian 'weather satellite', which happened to be equipped with laser cannons and heat-seeking guided missiles, destroyed the meteor" or something like that. The only question we fans have asking is: "WHERE'S THE SPECIAL EDITION DVD?!?!?!?!?!"
