Filmcritic.com - 7/10 by Keith BreeseCosmatos went on to bigger and in many ways duller films, Massacre in Rome remains one of his finest pictures
User Review - 8/10 by Alex rMassacre in Rome is a well crafted movie that recounts the events of the Fosse Ardeatine massacre, a massacre committed by the German SS during the Second World War. Although it could have been a bit better, the film is highly engaging and well acted. This is a retelling of a dark part of history during the war, and Cosmatos does a good job at capturing effective performances with the sheer brutality of the Nazi regime. This film will surely intrigue the war or history buff, and it is a film that is short, but manages to be a riveting piece of work. I find that this film is overlooked and it deserves to be rediscovered. George P. Cosmatos made a more dramatic film with Massacre in Rome than his later work. This is a film with a great cast, a well thought out story and a well written script that makes it standout among Cosmatos' best efforts. Although not perfect, this is still worth seeing and there is enough tension to keep you entertained for its runtime. I really thought it was a well made movie, one that tells a story with subtle overtones of the chaos of war. War dramas like this are rare, and if you enjoy a well made genre movie, then this is for you. Massacre in Rome is short, but it tells a story that needs to be told, and it doesn't overdo anything either. There are parts that could have been done a bit better, but overall this is a very good film that is worth checking out.
User Review - 6/10 by Sgt. C(55%) For those looking for a cheap, sleazy, Italian 70's exploitation movie then look elsewhere, because this, despite it being both Italian and made in the 1970's with the word massacre in its title, really isn't anything that could be even considered among that genre in any shape or form. Instead it's a very talky, very drawn out drama documenting a terrible Nazi atrocity towards random civilians of Rome at the end of the second world war. I myself knew very little of the terrible things that happened to the people of Rome before seeing this film, so it did enlighten me, which is something you don't often get with many films based on fact or otherwise. And as the film does go into a lot of detail regarding the events leading up to the massacre meaning you do feel that by the end most stones are left turned, and there's not really anything left to say. The film is a bit too slow burn as at times the plot feels like it's really not getting anywhere, but once it does heat up it shows how such an awful real life event could ever be orchestrated using nothing more than cold hearted controlled brutality.
User Review - 6/10 by Paul Da depressing war story about the partisans fighting off the jerrys in italy and what the german army did in retaliation for an attack. however the most interesting part was not played by richard burton as the no nonsense colenel but by marcello mastroianni as father pietro antonelli who's struggling to come to terms with the lack of interest and help from the vatican (a religious order he believes in). mostly this film is about the different characters struggling with what's happening in it. more psychological than action packed. another solid film from george p. cosmatos, the director of the cassandra crossing
User Review - 4/10 by Kajari GI really struggle with the films of George Pan Cosmatos and this is no exception - based on actual events, and with a good cast if falters with a lack of pacing or interest from the viewer (well at least me in any case).
