Charlotte, Mason's feisty neighbor, is the only friend he's ever had. She has always defended him, which stems from her feelings for him and the guilt she feels for him being the outcast. She is married to Earl, but is having an affair with the town's sheriff, Bucky. He is the wealthiest character, owning some real estate in the next town. Bucky is trying to save Charlotte from her abusive husband and the water toxicity, by moving her into one of the houses. Charlotte refuses to move unless Mason can go too, which frustrates Bucky because of his unrequited love for her. The entire story begins when Diego, a mysterious war vet, comes into town. Because Diego is Latino, he faces the consequences of racism and bigotry. Eventually Diego and Mason cross paths and form an unconventional companionship.
