Movie Reviews

The Spectator - 9/10 by Penelope HoustonI suspect these distinctly disillusioned effects go with endeavours to inject human interest into a basically mechanistic movie. Where the human interest leads is another question.
Chicago Sun-Times - 8/10 by Roger EbertMarooned isn't very interesting from a stylistic point of view, and the actors tend to get buried beneath the technology, but it does tell an exciting story, And that, I imagine, was all Sturges (whose storytelling includes The Great Escape and Bad Day at Black Rock) was really trying to do.
The New York Times - 7/10 by Howard ThompsonIf Marooned falls short as a soaring blockbuster, it does keep both feet on the ground.
Empire - 4/10 by William ThomasLike the stranded astronauts, we are forced to sit around for too long in stale air, waiting for something to happen. An overly-long, vacuous foray into space.
User Review - 10/10 by Doctor Faustus AOkay many might view this film and say that the Special Effects are horrible. Remember this was 1969 before the fancy computers and Industrial Light and Magic that we have today. I respect it at the point because they used what they had back then which was model miniatures and backdrops. I will say that the film deserved the Best Visual Effects Oscar because the effects were great at the time. The cast is terrific with Gregory Peck, Richard Crenna and a young Gene Hackman as well as Lee Grant. The film's other Oscar nominations were best cinematography and sound.
User Review - 10/10 by Stephen FThis is the first movie I ever saw in a theater; I was six, and it was at the height of the space race. It is still one of my all time favorite movies.
User Review - 10/10 by Wes SGreat movie, one of my all time favorites. Of course I want to be an Outer Space Submariner when I was kid (talk about conundrum).
User Review - 10/10 by Marian AIn the year man stepped on the moon, this movie brings a lot of interesting connotations and extreme situations. The coldness of space is amplified by the coldness of the technical protocols and disintegrated by the power of human choice.
User Review - 10/10 by Willard RMany of the reviews of this movie differ from mine (ie are WRONG). This movie is suspenseful and thoroughly entertaining. The movie centers on the people below (not above) and their furious efforts to save the astronauts above them. The fast action on the ground is contrasted with inaction of the helpless heroes stranded above. The conflict and material differences between the people below about how to proceed are the most interesting part of this film. I enjoyed and recommend this film.
User Review - 8/10 by John MSuspenseful space-rescue film that could be considered a companion piece to "Gravity!" While that film was more action oriented, "Marooned" is about the characters and what they go through. The performances are excellent throughout. And, the film builds the tension carefully and wisely as the stakes get higher as the film moves towards its conclusion. The visual effects won an Oscar in 1969. They are no where near the level of 1968's "2001: A Space Odyssey," but that isn't a surprise, as effects never got back to that level until 1977 with "Star Wars" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."
