Upstage MagazineKam WilliamsEspecially entertaining is this con man's exposing all the tricks of the trade, from how he healed confederates feigning illnesses to the special gestures and vocal cadences designed to hypnotize his gullible followers.
Village VoiceMichael AtkinsonIn 1972, Sarah Kernochan and Howard Smith's Marjoe was enough of an eye-opening sensation to make news of itself and Oscar winners of its creators.
New York TimesStephen HoldenFor many complicated reasons, fundamentalist Christianity in America doesn't look the same today as it did in 1972, when Marjoe won the Academy Award for best documentary.
User Reviewapril bhaving grown up around this type of fraud in religion, i found this to be spectacularly entertaining. an amazing glimpse into a world many people know nothing about. marjoe, the man is disarmingly charismatic and i found myself hoping that he went on to have a nice life after this. which he did.
User ReviewShanna CIt really opens your eyes to a whole new world. Honestly, it's tragic. A must see.
User ReviewMatthew MA perfectly crafted documentary. No narration. No "mood" music. No history lessons except, what Gortner himself offers. Lots of great historical footage, punctuated by Gortner's interviews. The portrait of Marjoe is compelling and raw.
User ReviewSheldon SDisturbing on a number of levels. Glory je to besus.
User ReviewLee BWild stuff. I recommend this to anyone with a taste for the bizarre.
User ReviewEd QA direct cinema approach is utilized in "Marjoe" in order to expose the corrupt underbelly of religion, and its link to capitalism, exploitation, and the monetary gain of talented charlatans.
User ReviewIgor KJesus and Cadillac in one sentence which comes out from the mouth one of the preachers summarizes the essence of their work. Let's talk about Jesus so that I can earn my new car. A very important documentary indeed how intelligent people like Marjoe can play on people beliefs and convince them that thay have been "revealed and liberated". Marjoe without any evil intention, before his "shows" explains the tricks of the trade of evangelist preaching, and them delivers them in a shown. This is an amazing stuff to see how people are easily fooled and tricked to get their 10-20 dollar bill out. Everybody should watch this to question their logical mind.
