Village VoiceSerena DonadoniThe director is all at sea with the choppy Manhattan Romance, finding nothing new in New York while self-consciously making a blander version of a Woody Allen romantic comedy.
Los Angeles TimesKatie WalshDespite what the film might want us to believe, if he walks, talks and acts like a selfish, predatory creep, he is, and there's just no sympathizing with him.
Austin ChronicleJosh KupeckiA slick but slight film that unfortunately resurrects everything that was problematically self-indulgent about so many New York rom-com indie films that have come before. This is irrelevant navel-gazing at its most tepid. Nothing (new) to see here, folks.
User Reviewmary bThis is a movie you have to see twice. The nuances are best appreciated when you have time to reflect and catch all the subtle subtext. Well written, gently executed, fun, funny & pleasant. What's not to love?
User ReviewHobart HIt's a fantastic original sweet movie.
User ReviewRazvan Florentin PI'm not that used to writing reviews, but "Manhattan Romance" was too good not to. The film takes the classic love story between best friends and shakes it up a bit. The girl best friend is not about dating the guy best friend because of one little hitch, she's a lesbian. I love the plot twist that this film offers; it kept me guessing the entire time. I enjoyed the movie so much; I already planned a night watching "Manhattan Romance" with my friends.
User ReviewBrendan NI had wondered where Katherine Waterston had come from and I finally came across one of her indie films. The film is at times bizarre but never dull, this is why indie filmmaking is leagues in front of the Hollywood mechanism. Besides Woody ALlen crafting films in his style and with unpredictable beats, filmmakers tend to fall on the Hollywood sword. The conclusion is fitting with the storytelling and I applaud writer/director for not giving the audience a super sweet finale. Waterston is the heart of the film and she is very cute and adorable, even if the film mirrors some of Chasing Amy's storyline. Interesting film that deserves more recognition. 05/10/2018.
User ReviewTatsuhito KA very Woody Allen-inflicted romcom. It's a little predictable in terms of its concept and stories like this have been done before, but I liked that it was somewhat true to life and O'Brien and Waterston had great chemistry together. Manhattan Romance doesn't add anything new to its genre, but still it's an enjoyable flick with some great moments.
User ReviewLee MCould not finish. Slow, tedious. A monotonous look into the lives of people who are totally ego-centric with no other goal than to satisfy themselves.
