User Review - 10/10 by Lee ?Again GREAT THANKS to SHAWN SMITH of BLACKEST HEART MEDIA for bringing this Soundtrack to CD. Manhattan Baby is my favorite FULCI soundtrack. Yet the film is only so-so but its a classic nevertheless. I first saw this on Lightning Video (a subsidiary of Vestron Video) in the summer of 1986--from THE BOX OFFICE video store in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania (in the same Plaza as Acme). Its in Cinemascope and the videotape was pan & scan and everything was cropped (or cut-off) from the edges of the screen. A scorpion, for instance, would literally wander off the right edge of the screen. Finally ANCHOR BAY came into being in 1996 and MANHATTAN BABY came to DVD in 2001 in all its 2:35.1 ASPECT RATIO GLORY!!!!!! (the movie is still only so-so even with the letter-boxing, but its still . . . a classic) Clive Barker is a TOTAL FAN of Fulci and rips-off the ending of MANHATTAN BABY in Hellraiser.

User Review - 6/10 by Scott JNot one of fulci`s best, the over reliance on spaggeti western camera shots and angles border on parody, it is fun to watch how when a simple insert shot or cutaway would suffice fulci instead chooses to create epic camera shots involving tilts with and focus shifts to highlight the slightest thing ie a clock ticking a heart machine beeping, thats part of the fun this slight story should be forgotten,( it seems to be ripping off the poorer exorcist 2 movie) but this loopy camera work and straight faced stupidity has its own unique charms.

Although far from perfect, this is nonetheless a pretty good effort that delivers some pretty effective thrills. I believe that one of the reasons that this film has received such negativity among genre fans is that this film departs from Fulci's previous efforts and he does something different. The film does have some gore, but it's very minimal compared to others in his filmography. The film relies on atmosphere to create terror, and even if it's not Fulci's finest work, this is among his most underrated. Manhattan Baby is a film that I would recommend more to the diehard Fulci fan. If you're just getting into his work, you may not want to start here. The film boasts an interesting plot, but one that definitely left a lot of room for improvement. Though I enjoyed the film, the film should have been better due to the fact that it boasted an interesting concept a terrific sense of atmosphere. In terms of what you'd expect from a Fulci film, you won't be disappointed, as this one still boasts plenty of bizarre and eccentric moments to thrill the diehard Fulci fans. If you're simply a casual fan, you may want to pass up on this; only the most demanding fan of Fulci's work will enjoy it, and appreciate its supernatural terror. This is a worthwhile film to view, especially if you enjoy his work, and though it is not perfect, it still is a well crafted film that has everything you'd expect from a Fulci film. Manhattan Baby is an underrated gem, that deserves to be seen and enjoyed for what it is, a supernatural nightmare, which is what Fulci accomplished even if it doesn't live up to The Beyond.
User Review - 6/10 by Aj Vfor what its worth and the time it came out. It is a great horror movie. First of all, if you're interested in seeing Fulci's work I strongly recommend you don't start here. Check out some of the other his other films first and then give this one a shot. After seeing this again I admit I kind of dig it, but it's not something to see again and again. Apparently it was meant to be a bigger budgeted and more lavish production, but something went wrong with the producer, distributor, or something and it shows. But all things considered, it's still a fairly interesting surreal horror flick.
