Full Plot Details

Upon the death of wealthy Chicagoan Edward Dennis in the late 1920s, his nine-year-old son Patrick Dennis becomes the ward of their only living relative, Edward's equally-wealthy New-York-residing sister, Mame Dennis. Edward's will states that Patrick is to be raised Protestant in a "traditional" manner and that the trustee, Mr. Babcock of the Knickerbocker Bank, will pay Mame for expenses incurred in raising Patrick, but he has the right to refuse to pay if he deems that she's not honoring the spirit of Edward's will. Mr. Babcock and Patrick's longtime nanny, the timid Agnes Gooch, are to ensure that Patrick is raised correctly. Edward included these stipulations in his will knowing that his sister is a flamboyant, freewheeling, eccentric woman who can be considered anything but traditional or conventional. Despite the disruption each provides in the other's life, Mame and Patrick form a loving, supportive relationship. Mame wants to provide her sense of guidance to Patrick, which means exposing him to a broad spectrum of all that life has to offer. That changes when Mr. Babcock learns what is going on, and the stock market crashes resulting in Mame losing all her money, the events in combination leading to Mr. Babcock enrolling Patrick in boarding school to remove him from Mame's daily influence. Although not for herself, Mame realizes that she needs money to get Patrick back and support her entire family, which includes Agnes and her faithful butler Ito. She might get a little help from her best friend, Broadway actress Vera Charles, and a southerner she meets named Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside. Over the next several years, Mame's influence on those around her, including Patrick, is presented, although those relationships are not always smooth sailing, especially as Patrick grows into a man with his own mind.

Video-Reviewmaster.com - 3/10 by Steve CrumThe fine music elevates this above miscast Lucy's negatives.
User Review - 10/10 by Brian KI love this version more than the original! Lucille Ball is hilarious in this! Quite tongue in cheek! We Need A Little Christmas! Best Christmas song for me!
User Review - 10/10 by David GI can easily make the argument that MAME is the best movie ever made. It's much past time for this film to be re-evaluated by critics.
User Review - 10/10 by derek pFOR SHEER CORNY ENJOYMENT I GIVE THIS MOVIE 10POINTS.
User Review - 10/10 by Andy nI don't know why it took so long for this movie to make it to DVD, but it's long overdue! I though Lucille ball was great as the irrestible Grand Dame Auntie Mame. I thought Lucy did a hell of a job potraying Mame in this lavish 1974 production. As we all know Lucy, was not the best singer in the world but she tried her best and I respect her for that, sheer determination. When Mame opened Easter 1974, it was attacked by the critics and panned, I personally belive that the reason why Mame was panned so bad is because critics had favored Angela Lansbury's performance on Broadway 1966, Dont get me wrong I love Angela Lansbury, but I will always Love Lucy for her talented legacy !!!!!!! So pick up a copy of mame and give it a second chance !!!!!!
User Review - 10/10 by Leo LA favorite! Absolutely love Lucille Ball in this movie.
User Review - 10/10 by arlyn cBy all accounts of the so-called "experts" in film critiquing, I should be drawn and quartered for giving this 1974 box-office flop a 5-star rating. Do I dare attempt to explain myself? Let me try... Lucille Ball was a comic wizard, and any die-hard fan of "I Love Lucy" would tell you that her biggest comedic quality was her facial expressions and body language. Although many people felt Lucy was too old to play this role (and the many "soft focus" close-up shots in the film may be a huge indicator). Nevertheless, she played excentric, colorful and brash with perfect comedic timing and her classic hysterical pratfalls. Add to this the completely PERFECT casting of Bea Arthur as Vera Charles and you really do have to give this film another chance. I know EVERYBODY says that the Rosilind Russell film is the best -- I LOVE that film also. But "Mame" is a retelling of that story in musical format, so it is very difficult to compare the two -- it's like trying to compare the musical film "Hairspray" with John Travlota in the part of Edna Turnblad to the original John Waters film starring Devine -- they are both enjoyable, but both very different movies. The production numbers in the movie are done on a grand scale (I love the opening number, "It's Today") and although the film looks dated by some of the camera techniques used during the early 70's films, it stil holds an endearing quality about it that allows me to watch it over and again. As a personal note, this movie became somewhat of a family tradition at my house growing up when VHS came out. Every year, after Thanksgivng dinner, our family would pop it into the VCR and enjoy a couple of magical hours together as a family, as we all sang along with the musical numbers and recited some of the funniest lines ("Vera, how old are you really? The truth, now!" "How old do you think I am?" "Oh, I'd say somewhere between forty and DEATH!") Despite all its production flaws and perceived miscasting, I haven't ever been able to criticize this picture. If you really hated this film, try to give it another chance -- try not comparing it with Russell's performance and soak in the fun and the magic that Gene Saks was trying to capture in this story...it really is there!
User Review - 10/10 by Brendan GI dont care what the critics say, I don't care what other people say about Lucille Ball in this movie. She's awesome. So she's not a singer/dancer. But she's a great actress. It's her acting that pulls this movie together and keeps it up. I loved it. For a big Lucille Ball fan, I loved it, and always will...
