Movie Reviews

The Playlist - 9/10 by Jessica KiangIt only ever connects in the small moments that fall through the cracks of the supposed formal and thematic experimentation—when the fine actors are allowed to walk and talk like real human beings, rather than a collection of tropes.
Screen International - 9/10 by Carmen GrayDespite its big-name cast (Catherine Keener is on impressive form), most viewers will find it an impossibly pretentious, drifting picture that, while brimful of pseudo-philosophising, lacks substance where it matters.
AV Club - 7/10 by Mike D'AngeloAll of the actors, including Franco, do excellent work, given the limitations imposed upon them by a scenario that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Were he a struggling up-and-comer rather than a movie star, the perception of an ambitious misfire like this one would probably be quite different. It’s not a good movie, but it deserves better than mockery.
Los Angeles Times - 7/10 by Gary GoldsteinA pretentious head-scratcher involving would-be artistic expression, mental illness and shaving cream (don't ask).
Reel Talk Online - 7/10 by Candice FrederickFor what it's worth, there's nothing outrageously awful about the film... It's just utterly bland.
Entertainment Weekly - 6/10 by Leah GreenblattA mess that will no doubt meet a merciful box office death.
Film Journal International - 5/10 by David NohThis is Franco's second directorial collaboration with the artiste who goes by the name of Carter, and hopefully they won't push their luck further.
Variety - 4/10 by Guy LodgeIt’s hard for the audience to invest in a protagonist this solipsistic.
Film.com - 4/10 by Jenni MillerMaladies is at least watchable, though just barely.
Village Voice - 4/10 by Inkoo KangThe social construction of illness is certainly a worthy topic, but Carter situates his characters far from any semblance of a plot and even further from his heart.
