Full Plot Details

Robert Traven, a dyspeptic, edgy, American businessman, arrives in Naples and is received by a friendly but officious local company representative. Exhausted by the pressures and inconveniences of a long flight, he is looking forward to rest and relaxation in his hotel room when he is visited by buoyant and upbeat Antonio Jassiello, a clerk in a bank record room, who is surprised when his old friend from the War does not recognize him. The annoyed and exhausted Traven feels he's being scammed, and the two part on bad terms. Jassiello does leave a photo of Traven and his sister taken 40 years earlier, and the time and the setting seen to stir the American's memory, so he seeks out Antonio to apologize. Jassiello brings him back home to renew acquaintances with his family including his now middle-aged married sister, whose hospitable husband is friendly and not the least bit jealous, and Traven soon discovers why he has not faded from their memories as they have from his. Antonio has been long forging letters from Bob, claiming all manner of heroics as he globe-trots around the world. Jassiello and his family's warmth and genuine affection for him causes Traven to prioritize the family's needs over his and his company's best interests.

Movie Reviews

Spirituality and Practice - 3/10 by Frederic and Mary Ann BrussatThe storyline shoots in far too many directions.
Chicago Sun-Times - 3/10 by Roger EbertThe movie made me squirm with the transparency of its ideas, the dread predictability of its plot, and the shallowness of its characters.
User Review - 8/10 by Brian VA great funny movie with Jack Lemmon and Marcello Mastroinni. Jack and Marcello play two World War II buddies reunited in modern day Naples, but this isn't a simple reunion. It seems that Antonio (Mastroianni) has been sending his sister forged letters from Robert (Lemmon) since the war ended. Originally, it was his way of helping his sister forget the American who left her behind. But after a while, Antonio got into it and kept it up for forty years. Now it's up to Robert, a jaded ulcer-ridden American executive, to try to live up up to the legend Antonio has created. This movie brought back memories of when I was a young sailor in stationed for two and a half years in Naples. That's not the reason that I rate it highly, but it is the reason that I watched it in the first place. You won't be disappointed if you watch this one!
User Review - 8/10 by Daniel FAnother good old Jack Lemmon movie, this one not as old as it was 1985. Also lots of good and interesting shots of Naples Italy, as that is where the movie takes place, and Lemmon is actually the only American in the entire film (co-stars Mastoianni) which makes it more interesting. The plot is kind of crazy, but I like the difference, it is refreshing somehow to watch a movie that doesn't follow a standard line, as long as it is still believable. Check this one out.
User Review - 6/10 by James HJack Lemmon is always worth tuning into. He is one of those very very few actors who has never made an awful film. His teaming with Marcello Mastroianni is a good one and it is great to see two wonderful actors work together. The first half of the film is much better than the second half, but overall the film is worth watching.
