VarietyAmy NicholsonCoco and Mahlik's scenes are the only ones that seem to take place on earth. Everything else is from some Maya Angelou-inspired Mars.
VarietyPeter DebrugeWith a plot as predictable as a haiku, RZA and screenwriter Nicole Jefferson Asher would have done better to embrace the strangeness.
The Hollywood ReporterFrank ScheckWhile Nicole Jefferson Asher's script often lapses into romantic melodrama, it also features incisive dialogue and characterization that lift Love Beats Rhymes above its formulaic aspects. RZA's straightforward, gimmick-free direction suits the material well and, not surprisingly, displays a keen sense of milieu.
The New York TimesGlenn KennyThe script by Nicole Jefferson Asher toggles between sharp observations about wordcraft and some “Dynasty”- or Tyler Perry-level soap operatics. RZA’s direction lacks visual personality, but he keeps the narrative moving and elicits strong performances from his cast.
Los Angeles TimesRobert AbeleLove Beats Rhymes lacks its own ambition to be something different.
Village VoiceSerena DonadoniLove Beats Rhymes is more of a showcase for star Azealia Banks than director RZA, but his influence is still felt in this formulaic hip-hop romance.
User Reviewlashae mI really liked it. cute love story amongst individuals and between poetry and hip-hop. great APPEARANCES. great poetry. great rhymes. Common, jill scott, murdamook, the list goes on. i was also kind of impressed with azealia banks performance. this movie reminded of an updated version of love jones; not as grown, but gave me the same feeling.
User ReviewSean PLove Beats Rhymes is the kind of movie that just doesn't get made enough. This is a sweet, sensitive, and smart movie about a young, ambitious black woman who decides that she can have all that she wants, school, career, a good man, and that all it takes is a little hard work and desire. I wish more movies had the courage to tell young women that you don't have to compromise all the time and that you can demand all that you want and work toward getting it. https://geeks.media/movie-review-love-beats-rhymes?_ga=2.265078863.1126457623.1513947710-953607229.1513947710
