User Review - 10/10 by Richard%20 NAbsolutely superb independant Horror Movie. If you like your horror with heart, soul and genuinely unsettling moments then look no further. I'd like to add that I watched this the same day that I tried to watch 'Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets'. I couldn't finish Valerian while 'Lord of Tears' is easily my favourite horror of the past few years (up there with 'The VVitch', 'A Field in England' and 'The Ritual'. So yes, basically I'm saying that based on current form Lawrie Brewster is better than Luc Besson.
User Review - 6/10 by Orlok WDeeply philosophical, startlingly fresh, Lawrie Brewster's film blends modern film making techniques with old school sensibilities to create one of contemporary horror's first true classics. Reaching back to horror cinema's roots, and further back to ancient folklore and myth, Lord of Tears crafts a bleak picture of trauma and grief against the otherworldly backdrop of modern Scotland... For those who go for story, characters and a lot of atmosphere for their scares-Formidable Eeriness-- It's Gothic horror/art house feel. Right from the get go, you sense a feeling of dread that you can never shake off, and feel helpless as that feeling of dread turns to major creepiness. The story mixes Gaelic folklore, biblical apocrypha, urban legends, and a healthy dose of childhood trauma to wondrous effect... A return to contemplative Gothic Horror!!
User Review - 6/10 by Brian KThis movie felt very different from a horror movie, even though it had its goth and creepy elements. But somehow it was more of a dramatic movie with a darker atmosphere. Also, the look of the movie was of an independent film although there were some scenes and landscapes that looked really good. Moreover, the acting was kind of a mixed bag, I wasn't completely sold with it but somehow it felt adequate in the more romantic scenes instead of the ones that were supposed to be scary. I'm completely sure this movie should have a lower rating, but there was something about the characters and their relationship, that really was outstanding and really resonated until the end. Also it was very nostalgic in the end. ~August 16, 2014~
User Review - 6/10 by Kevin GA strange, creepy and well-filmed movie. I didn't know what to expect before I watched this but there was definitely a cool style to it. It did seem to drag a bit and probably could have been shorter but in all a neat little film.
User Review - 4/10 by Voodoo RI really wanted to like this movie it definitely had a lot of promise, but does fall down in a few key areas. The first issue I have is with the the time period it takes place. The school buildings and all the places in the film outside of the house give the impression it takes place in the 70's. Which is odd considering it takes place in current day and that from my memory is only specifically mentioned on the hex media site and the glimpses of modern technology. This seems even weirder with the female lead who's hinted to be from a different time who looks to be in her early mid/20's , but has the style of someone growing up in the 40's and the movie tries hard to imply that she is from a very different time. Which would make sense considering the black and white photograph found later that is aged and the set heavily sets the tone of the movie taking place in the 70's which would make the main character in his mid to late 30's and a small child in the 40's when the photo was taken. One other issue I have is with the film is the main actor. I'm not sure who decided to have him freak out at everything. It makes it much harder to take him seriously later on when he is legitimately afraid, but harder to buy considering he's been doing that the whole film. The last issue I have is with the Owl Man. Great looking and he looks creepy and the movie really tries, but the movie doesn't really feature him till the last 20 min maybe half hour. Considering the whole movie centers on him they really don't include him as much. I'm fully aware a large part of horror is keeping certain things in the dark however, it seemed a lot was revealed last minute and also his appearances were sporadic. One thing about HP Love Craft did so well was the sense of for boding the power of the gods through out the whole story and in this case it really feels shoved in last minute. Had they worked out the time line/plot holes, issues with the main actor and included more of the Owl Man earlier on it could've been great. They really skip of over a lot of the Owl Man and it feels like it got thrown in at the end. The promise though is definitely there, which makes this so much more disappointing especially considering the trailer and the implication the Owl Man would be more involved.
User Review - 4/10 by Ciaran MThat was pretty disappointing. The cheesy romance didn't help especially when the "Sixth Sense" esque plot twist happened, it just kind of ruined the rest of the film for me. The ending was the worst part. It was poorly executed and the fact that they used a minuscule and rather uninteresting side plot that we never got much insight into to fuel the conclusion was really cheap and it goes to show that they obviously ran out of ideas on a way to end this. As for whether the film is scary or not, no it really isn't. Sure the lead actress (who was pretty damn hot) looked creepy in her Marilyn Manson makeup and the Owlman costume itself did look creepy at times, I still wouldn't call this film scary though. It lacked tension and suspense. I will commend the lack of jumpscares and screamers though. The scene where he dug up his time-capsule was the point where I started wondering when this film would end. The music was good (even though the pool scene pretty much looked like the prelude to a really bad 80's porno, even the music was porno-like) and at times made a few scenes pretty creepy. The acting was beyond bad at points, the main actor sounded flat as a rock and can't act like he's in panic or scared at all. The main actress was eye-candy at best, her character was annoying and her acting was just alright. The guy who voiced Owlman though was surprisingly spectacular and completed the image of a Pagan god very well. Otherwise I won't be watching this film a second time, that's for sure.
User Review - 2/10 by Luis RCongrats on getting a Kickstarter movie made. Sadly, the constant overuse of certain shots (because they looked cool and maybe you wanted to showcase how awesome it turned out?) combined with some really bad acting and an extremely dull pace left me Bored To Tears.
