Yahoo! MoviesStaci Layne WilsonLondon: The Modern Babylon is, as a whole, a highly educational and extremely entertaining overview of 'The Smoke'.
Village VoiceDaphne HowlandTemple and editor Caroline Richards demonstrate that the London mob (it can seem like there's been only one mob through the ages) time and again rescues the city from its complacency—and safeguards it from the suffocation of class-bound England.
Movies.comChristopher CampbellA distinct sort of time travelogue of the city's rougher patches ... the kind of doc that scores the suffragette movement to "Oh Bondage Up Yours!" by X-Ray Spex.
Financial TimesNigel AndrewsThis isn't the cinema's last word on London, but it will silence competitors for a few years to come.
Little White LiesAdam Lee DaviesUltimately there's not enough invention or verve to set this apart from a competent TV documentary.
User ReviewMarcus WVibrante, vitalista, ambicioso y apabullante documental sobre la forja del Londres multicultural, una entidad compleja y con vida propia.
User ReviewAnthony NJulien Temple has really hit his stride in the field of Music documentaries in recent years ,his Dr Feelgood, Joe Strummer,Glastonbury and Sex Pistols docs have all been outstanding. Now Temple turns his attention to the city of London and its past history and its future right up unti.l the riots in 2011. To sya that Temple has constructed a masterpiece of film making is selling the film short as a portrait of my favourite city Temple has deliverer the goods. The film traces London from the early 20th century when it was the heart of the British Empire ,through Two world wars and periods of decline right up to the modern multicultral wonderland of today. Temple uses his images and music well with the Clash and The Sex Pistols obviously in the mix but we also get music hall ditties and Noel Coward in there as well. The film interviews a cross section of Londoners as well from Tony Benn to immigrants who arrived in the 50s . Its a wonderful tribute to a wonderful city and i for one cant waut to see it again.
User ReviewEric KSome great footage and music of London past and present. Essential viewing for those who grew up in London.
User ReviewIan TReally enjoyed this even if some of the politics seems a bit simplistic or reactionary. I loved the way it blended a hundred or so years.
User ReviewRichard IVisually engaging, politically simple minded polemic about London's history from the point of view of someone still labouring under the illusion that the Sex Pistols were anti establishment.
