Movie Reviews

User Review - 4/10 by Daryl LI can't say how much this film disappoints me at the first place. The film as a whole is filled with useless melodramas, a screenplay that lacks honesty and pureness, and direction - way too over-acidic, if not flaky. I don't really know if this is one film with a cooking show segment, or a cooking show made into a movie (at least there was the effort to put up a story). What's really distracting is the use of actors that although good, yet are somewhat limited to scenes that are not that too challenging. In short, amateur-ish. If I did not watch it with my parents, it would not stay long inside my DVD player. I would rather watch some old Filipino classics like Bernal's, Brocka's, Gallaga's, and so on. Speaking of, Peque Gallaga's latest film "Agaton & Mindy" is another disappointment, considering he is the master behind "Oro Plata Mata" and "Virgin Forest" (with Uro Dela Cruz to write the screenplay). I also enjoyed "Bad Bananas sa Puting Tabing" with of course two late great Filipino movie legends, Jay Ilagan and Johnny Delgado. Going back, at least, I liked "Agaton & Mindy" better than this Lore Reyes' latest offer. Michael De Mesa's performance is my favorite in here. His character Tio Pinoy, a drunkard bakery-owner constantly grows on the audience. It's his performance, not the character itself that is extraordinary. Paolo Contis is fun to watch, especially when he does the same old comic expressions of his, making me remember him as the inquisitive child in "Oki Dok". The film as a whole is a cliche. There's an invisible watermark that says so. Only if it is made to be more concrete. The details do not actually explain the how's and why's; or even any implications of such. I remember the main character Fidel in one of his scenes with love prospect Carmel (Karylle Padilla) saying that we don't owe any single thing to our parents. My mind instantly asks, "But why?" I was expecting for an answer to my question but all I hear is, "Kungsabagay, pag sila ang nawala, mahirap na." Duh? So what's the argument? Don't just give a statement, be sure to expound your ideas. Litsonero tells a story of a balikbayan named Fidel. He pursues his career as a chef in Europe. He returns home to the Philippines with high hopes and expectations that he can help his family financially. But what's implied is, he can abandon them anytime he wants to - by being independent. Independent in a sense that when he soon makes his own family, he has no further responsibility to his parents and siblings. Being ingrate is not a Filipino thing. The film is educational, you can learn how to prepare a mouth-watering lechon exactly how the experts do it. The recipe is right there, just carefully hear the resident litsonero, Mang Carding utter his secrets for a delicious lechon, you can instantly make your own. But aside from the recipe thing, there is nothing more interesting about this film. One film that struck my mind after watching "Litsonero", Rory B. Quintos' 2002 film "Kailangan Kita" with Aga Muhlach and Claudine Barretto to star as lovers. Honestly, I really adored the film back when I was in high school. It's romantic with the right kind of twist. I always remember Johnny Delgado as the stone-hearted father who seem not to care at all about his child Claudine Barreto. But in the end, he reveals himself as an understanding old man. In that film also, we can see, Aga Muhlach being an apprentice of a local blind cook played by Dante Rivero. Characters Fidel and Mang Carding are Muhlach's and Rivero's characters' counterpart in Litsonero. Aga Muhlach's character is also a balikbayan just like Fidel in Litsonero. So let me ask this, is Litsonero an original weaving of its writer's wild imagination?
