Inspired by the unguarded animosity that the mere mention of Toronto incites among the majority of Canadians, filmmakers Albert Nerenberg and Rob Spence follow a character named "Mister Toronto" as he launches a coast-to-coast Toronto Appreciation tour. Along the way, the crew will encounter everyone from those claiming to be "recovering Torontonians" to folks who have vowed never to set foot in the city cited by the United Nations as the world's most culturally diverse. Could this seething resentment be something as simple as envy, or have the denizens of this worldly metropolis truly done something to offend their embittered fellow countrymen?
Leave your thoughts about Let's All Hate Toronto.
User ReviewBrian YAn important documentary examining Canada's nonsensical hatred of the greatest city in the entire universe. Why must you hate Toronto's humble magnificence Canada? Just embrace the greatest.
User ReviewKristal CA documentary that is exciting to watch as it is surprising with a unique twist near the end. Not to be stereotypical but Torontians are comforting, coalesced people, or at least the 100's present at Nathan's Philips Square Park that evening who graciously hugged a mourning Mr. Toronto.
User ReviewKathryn RLoved it! Mr. Toronto is cute :) Doesn't make me want to live in the GTA again though. (and to think that all I wanted as a teen was to do so!)
User ReviewFrank ZPretty funny if you are from Toronto and don't really care- the ending left me all choked up (well, almost). Half serious, half hilarious.
User ReviewJared dA decent little doc, but I feel it might be hard to watch if you're (a) born in Toronto and have never lived anywhere else, or (b) have lived anywhere in Canada but never in Toronto. Having grown up outside of Toronto but living here now, this was a good movie to watch and one that I really identified with. It was less factual and serious than I expected, but it was also more fun to watch than I expected, so I guess it balances out. The funny thing about this movie may be the way in which it necessarily plays into the anti-Toronto stereotype: though it's a movie about hating Toronto, it's nearly irrelevant to non-Torontonians, and is, in the end, an admitted reputation-reclamation project that only matters to the centre of its own universe: Toronto. That said, its point is well made: Toronto has not done itself many favours as far as upping its profile to the rest of Canada, and it may just be that no one quite hates Toronto the way that it hates itself - the city is depicted as one with something for everyone that is as a result conflicted, and perhaps paralyzed by it - criticisms come from both sides of every issue, and the city is damned if it does, and damned if it doesn't. Sharp, short movie and worth seeing.
User ReviewSean LHilarious documentary! I found myself literally always going "that's so true".. haha We really all do hate Toronto!
User ReviewMonika NReally funny and entertaining. Witty, controversial and full of "laugh out loud" humour.
User ReviewTrent GA very funny look at Canada's obsession with a hatred of Toronto.
User ReviewJay AMildly diverting comic documentary that gently mocks our country's love/hate relationship with T.O.
User ReviewPamela MMore of a "mock"umentary than a show that actually looks seriously at the deep seated anti-Toronto mentality that most of Canada has...but that's what makes it a fun show to watch. Torontonians should watch this to have a little bit of an understanding of how the rest of the country views them, and also understand that much of it is tongue-in-cheek. Canada wouldn't be the same without T.O., but who's to say it wouldn't be better? (jk I'm from Calgary, after all) I did agree with one of the final statements of the film, that the city that hates Toronto the most is, well, Toronto. Stand up and take actual pride in your city and maybe the rest of the nation will follow. Both sides of the issue are well-presented and it's a fun, short movie that is well worth seeing.
