BBC.comJamie RussellIt's a subversive work and masterful suspense thriller that's the equal of anything Hitchcock ever put his name to.
Filmcritic.comChristopher Nulleither way you want to look at the film, Clouzot was right
Film4Tom DawsonUnfairly dismissed in the 1940s as pro-Nazi propaganda, this electrifying work represents a singularly pessimistic vision of the human condition from one of cinema's most bracingly misanthropic directors.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)Ken HankeVery shrewdly designed to work as a mystery thriller -- complete with red herrings -- and it undeniably holds the viewer's interest throughout with the mystery.
Movie GazetteAnton BitelA masterful blend of dark misanthropy and small-town hysteria
CinemaniaDan JardineA sophisticated and morally complex look at the things that damaged people living in a dangerous time will do
The SpectatorVirginia GrahamAlthough the story gets a little out of hand in the end, this film possesses a good share of the qualities we seek from a French producer... a tender regard for detail, perfect casting, and simple but thoughtful photography.
CinePassionFernando F. CroceA searching light on humanity's warts and pockmarks
User ReviewStefano LOne of the great murder mysteries from the master of suspense.
User ReviewChristophe MAn interesting film noir, beautifully shot, especially with a handful that probably could not be done as well today (the letter falling into the silent church). I watch these films, and I cannot help but realize that I have seen countless throwbacks to these films my entire life. It's such a rejuvenating experience finally finding out where the references originated from. Now, this isn't the first film noir nor the first of its kind, but it definitely feels like a step towards a more bold attempt of storytelling in such a genre/experience. Watch it. You be the judge.
