In the beginning, she was a young laundress working in "Le Mouton Bleu", a renowned Paris whorehouse. One day, while Armand was away in Switzeland, working for a revolutionary movement aiming to murder a Russian Prince, Louise met the second man in her life, a British Lord she soon called Dicky (David Niven). The latter offered to marry her. In exchange, he would save Armand from the police's grip. She accepted on the condition she could still see Armand.

Movie Reviews

Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 9/10 by Dennis SchwartzA silly, forgettable sex comedy that is a star vehicle for Sophia Loren.
The Spectator - 9/10 by Isabel QuiglyGary and Ustinov fail to be bogged down by the story's inherent banalities because they are quite outside it and its limitations.
Variety - 8/10 by Variety StaffExperiment of starting and ending this pic with Sophia Loren as an 80-year-old, an alleged aristocrat with a somewhat simpering tedious voice, doesn't come off.
New York Times - 8/10 by Eliot Fremont-SmithWhatever the causes of the minor disatisfactions inherent in this film, its major rewards are due to Peter Ustinov's sensitive conception and superb direction.
EmanuelLevy.Com - 6/10 by Emanuel LevyAn artistic and commercial flop in which both Paul Newman and Sophia Loren are miscast.
User Review - 6/10 by Kevin RFor she's a jolly good fellow! Lady L is an elegant and beautiful baroness of sorts that recalls a faster lifestyle prior to her baron husband where life was fast, her man was faster, and she loved him deeply, but life was hard and money was harder and then she met her husband and life took a different direction... "This was not so much of a house as a house." Peter Ustinov, director of Secret Flight, Billy Budd, Memed My Hawk, Hammersmith is Out, Vice Versa, Private Angelo, and Romanoff and Juliet, delivers Lady L. The storyline for this picture is just okay but is fun to watch unfold and I loved the conclusion. The acting is excellent and the cast delivers awesome performances and includes Paul Newman, Sophia Loren, David Niven, Marcel Dalio, and Philippe Noiret. "I'm in no position to tell you to shut your mouth but I'd like to." I came across this on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and had to DVR it based on it starring the marvelous Paul Newman and Sophia Loren. This was a little disappointing based on the excellent cast and their solid performances, but the story isn't as fascinating as I felt it could have been; however, the conclusion is perfect and makes this worth seeing once for fans of the classics. "Never tamper with a policeman's dignity." Grade: C+
User Review - 6/10 by Wes SThis is a little known movie, which is really too bad because it is hilarious! The plot is a a strange one, and not too clearly defined either, but the film somehow muddles through it. The fact that Sophia Loren, Paul Newman, and David Niven are in this was reason enough for me to want to see it. If you like any of these actors, you'd probably enough watching this - it's good fun!

User Review - 4/10 by Doctor SReceived poor critical reviews, but I figured with Sophia Loren & Paul Newman during the '60s there should be SOMEthing worth watching, right? Eh, not so much. Neither seems to be trying very hard, although Loren does light comedy nicely in some scenes with aging makeup to appear 80, but that pretty much defeats the eye candy aspect. Slow paced, dully plotted, and quite inconsequential - there's simply no spark to this movie.
