Chicago Sun-TimesRoger Ebert[Malle's film is] about a particular kind of human being, one capable of killing and hurting, one incapable of knowing or caring about his real motives, one who would be a prime catch for basic training and might make a good soldier and not ask questions.
Movie HabitMarty MapesA generation after WWII, Louis Malle shed light on French collaborators
Cinema WriterJay AntaniMalle's absolute faith in his skills as a storyteller and in the inherent power of this true story puts Lacombe, Lucien in the company of the best humanist portraits ever filmed.
Urban CinefileAndrew L. UrbanSuperbly evocative of the period in both imagery and mood, Lacombe Lucien is a character study of a young man during a dark chapter in French history
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyThis coolly detached WWII chronicle, which is critical of the French Resistance, is one of Louis Malles' strongest and most personal films.

User ReviewPatrick COne of the greatest movies about fascism ever made.
User ReviewElijah BAlong with "Come and see" the best film depicting youth's during war.
User ReviewAugustine HThis is a movie about life during war as it is. No heroics, no charm. The movie is about an unsophisticated kid from country side who takes full advantage of the war. Initially Lucien tries to join the resistance but he is denied as there are many more like him. On being refused he joins Gestapo and thoroughly enjoys all the benefits associated with it. He blackmails a Jew tailor and seduces his beautiful daughter. Every frame of the movie shows only two things: Lucien's selfishness and his innocence. In spite of being with the Gestapo he is no thug. He doesn't understand all the complexities. He wants to fight and also enjoy all the benefits that comes from being part of the German police.
User ReviewMarc LFantastic film. Very moving. Fresh and without the usual moralist crap that comes with Hollywoodian WW2 movies... Which makes Lacombe Lucien much more accurate also, when it comes to portraying this period of history.
