Movie Reviews

User Review - 10/10 by Mundivaganti WOne reviewer called this film "...quirky and touchingly heartbreaking." The lead actor, Dominique Pinon, says "This film is dramatic, tragic, but, at the same time, paradoxically funny." There is a good reason: the film is based on the book, "Les Bottes Rouges," (The Red Boots) by Franz Bartelt that won a prestigious "dark comedy" award in France. It is set in a bucolic factory town in the stunningly beautiful French Ardennes on the Meuse river. The main character, Basile Matrin (Dominique Pinon), is a 35+ year veteran at the factory where he manages the stockroom. He is married to Rose (Marina Tomé) a woman bored with her mundane life. One day a beautiful young woman, Maryse Duval (Delphine Depardieu) starts work at the factory as Basile's assistant. The story unfolds from this event and is told by Basile's best friend and neighbor (Pascal Turmo), the narrator for the tale, who is a reporter for the local daily newspaper. This is one of those films where you will be left pondering. You will want to watch it again and then you will discover aspects you missed the first time. There are layers to this tale. Basile is a man who strives to control every aspect of his life: he locks the gate to his home with a chain and lock, he worries about making sure his car is locked, he constructs a chastity belt for his wife (but does not tell her). He controls the inventory in his stockroom with exactness. He adores his wife and is madly in love with her. But...love is one thing that cannot be controlled. Rose is bored. She is consumed by the desire to have a different life. She dreams of romance. The Journalist neighbor is the quintessential observer. His home is a repository for thousands of books. The woman of his dreams is Salammbô, the heroine of a novel written in 1862 by Gustave Flaubert. When the lovely young Maryse Duval asks if he has ever been in love he answer yes, but adds: "I prefer dreaming of women to sleeping with them. One says 'make love' the same way one says 'make the bed' - they are both chores." Turmo is perfection in this role. His face reflects the quiet, non-judgmental calm of the consummate observer. He covers the town news and watches the love triangle that troubles his neighbors with exquisite detachment. Viewers outside of France will likely be unfamiliar with the actors. Some may recognize Dominique Pinon who has a long and distinguished international film and stage career. Early on he became a favorite of directors Jean-Jacques Beineix (Diva) and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children, Alien Resurrection, Amélie). He was recently a guest star on the popular series "Outlander" where he played Master Raymond. His career on the stage is extensive and eclectic. He's won several awards for his acting on stage and in films. He is currently in a French television crime drama, "Cassandra." There is a vulnerable sweetness, an 'everyman' quality to Pinon that makes even his not-so-nice characters likable. You find yourself rooting for them. The other actors bring strong acting skills to this film. Delphine Depardieu is the daughter of Alain Depardieu ("The Piano") and niece of Gerard Depardieu. Read down the list of the cast and you will find a mix of remarkable veteran and unknown talents. The director, Manuel Sanchez (Les Arcandiers) used a deft eye with his casting. He believes there are no "small roles" in a film, that every player is important to the ensemble. Indeed, in this film he demonstrates that to perfection. And, not least, the verdant French Ardennes play a major role. The beauty of the forests and Meuse river form a delicious backdrop. The people of the Ardennes crowd-funded this film, hosted the film production and served as extras. They are understandably proud of this movie. Give it a watch. It certainly is a quirky film, and, as mentioned, funny and "touchingly heartbreaking." You will be drawn into the story, you will laugh, you will curse, and you will probably cry. And, don't be surprised if you look up "French Ardennes" on the map and put it on your travel bucket list.
