User ReviewShiza SReally liked this movie... it does have it's flaws, such as it's length, and it's speed. A lot of the events were a little difficult to catch, but was still a great story. I'd like to say that this is Soha's best work, and Shiney gave an amazing performance. I really hope to see these two in more nice roles.. such as the ones they played in this movie
User ReviewLuveen WThis is easily the dark horse masterpiece of Bollywood in 2007. What more could one ask for from a movie? Stellar performances; soul-wrenching melodies; opulent imagery; dense, multi-layered grey characters, not just characters with grey shades, unlike most of today's "blockbusters"; and truly, truly visionary direction and visualization. The blending of the personal and the professional, and the sordid stories of the grand world that is the movies is portrayed with subtlety and intensity at the same time. Other than the fact that Khan probably needs more time to grow as an actor, this is a flawless work. The film draws you into its time and makes you wish we were still there. A classic!
User ReviewAnu MBrilliantly made movie revolving around the lives of the people in the Indian film industry of 50's.Really liked the story/depiction of Nikhat and Zafar's relationship. Excellent performances by Shiney Ahuja and Soha Ali Khan. The actors, songs, costumes, sets and the use of Urdu language give this period film a distinctinve charm.
User ReviewRabzie AAlways respected Soha's calculative choices of work. Beautiful ensemble of characters with its plot.
User ReviewHasan GSudhir Mishra and Prakash Jha did it again. Very well made movie. Excellent wardrobe and great set designs. Its so deep and sensitive. Everyone did justice to their roles. I blv Soha would get an award for this one. Shiney is great as usual, Sonya Jehan, grand daughter of Malika Noor Jehan was impressive for her 2nd movie ever. I strongly recommend it. Its only for a selected few who would understand the work behind the apparent. Certainly Not for people who like movies like Om Shanti Om and Partner.
User ReviewDevashish SI like the introspective self-examination that's going on in Bollywood ... this one's a much more serious attempt than OSO. It works on several levels but misses on a few.
User ReviewShafayat RThis movie is so good and yet so unknown that it terrifies me. I mean, if such movies are bombing at the box office while movies like Race, OSO, etc. are at the top...I mean, I can't help asking 'What the hell is wrong with you people?' Sudhir Mishra, cheers, again.
User ReviewDebbie LI really liked this movie because it was telling the story of a actress without being way filmi and overly glamorous. Such lovely songs and cinematography.
User Reviewv9y jThe director combines the opulent drama of a Bhansali with the brooding symbolism of a Guru Dutt. In other words, it's one of the best use of art design, cinematography and melodrama woven in the fabric of storytelling that I've seen. The characters may not be utterly realistic, but they serve as good stand-ins to reflect the inner politics, casting couches, affairs, break-ups and disappointments of yesteryear's Indian film industry. The relationship between Zafar and Nikhat was powerfully brought forth on screen, helped mostly by well written characters and scenes (the one where Zafar insults Nikhat in the middle of the road comes to mind) and also partly due to the chemistry between the two actors. The torment and passion of two people came naturally for Shiney and Soha when they were together. I was less impressed by Soha outside of those scenes, especially in the ones where she had to "act". Among the supporting casts, Vinay Pathak and Rajat Kapoor have little more than caricatures for the most part, but they do get their opportunity to shine (towards the end for Vinay, and the starry arrogance for Rajat). Sonya Jehan looks heavenly, but the motivations or thoughts of her character did not come across well. Sushmita Mukherjee was a good surprise. The music is excellent and very much suitable keeping the period in mind. It's certainly one of the better movies to come out of Bollywood in the past few years. Two major complaints that I had were, firstly, the abrupt cuts, which were effective for some scenes, but annoying and confusing for others. Secondly, those poorly choreographed love scenes ended up looking more vulgar than necessary.
User ReviewAshutosh MI saw this movie just to see Soha and Shiney. This was long movie and bit dragged out ending. If you want to kill time, this is not bad.
