Set in the Shoryaku and Chotoku eras of Japan's Heian period, the animated short Kai Doh Maru is set against a background of a capital under threat from disease, outlaws, and political plots. The story reworks themes from Japanese folklore, focusing on the relationship between Sakata no Kintoki (Kintaro) and Minamoto no Raiko, one of the first military Minamoto and "monster hunter" of folklore. The story replaces the traditional image of Kintaro - a strong, ruddy-cheeked man - with that of a determined, tomboyish girl, while retaining much of the traditional character such as the carrying of an axe. Other historical figures from the period who have also become objects of folklore, such as Fujiwara no Michinaga and the rebel Taira no Masakado also make an appearance.

User ReviewChris CA stunning, powerful and concise anime. The washed out colours are a fresh take on the genre, and reminiscent of the artwork of the period portrayed in the film. The story is complex, and told in a concise manner, which leave the viewer a large amount of work so as to understand the character relationships - highly rewarding! Themes include love, family, honour, and growing up. Highly recommended (although the English dub is not!).
User Reviewellie sthe animation was unique and really fit the story - the washed out colors of the boring and the vivid colors of fire and blood really brought a kind of surreal to this sadly short film...the story had potential, but it wasn't reached. i never really understood what the 'Kai Doh Maru' was or what Kintoki was being attacked...i didn't quite get that she was a girl until 15 minutes into the movie...all in all if you know the story and you know what to expect it's pretty good, but if you just watch it not knowing what it's about i can guarantee that you won't get it. the Animation is the saving grace of this movie, it was very pretty and reminiscent of the time period this movie was based in.
User ReviewAmelia RThis is a complicated, part political, part twisted love story that i found very enjoyable, if not slightly confusing, but ultimately an epic tragic love triangle. Twisted yet beautiful. I'd only recommend it to people who like to pay attention and dissect movies, not simply swallow them whole.
User ReviewCharlie CFrom the studio that created Ghost in the Shell and Blood: The Last Vampire. Don't worry too much about the story. It is fractured and ends abruptly (made in Japan. It happens?!) It looks lovely though. The animation is sweet and the reserved pallet gives the film it's own style. Just sit back and soak up the visuals.
User ReviewZachary RThis movie I will say is good but very confusing. It starts off with a princess named Toki has had her father killed and one of her friends is killed as well while protecting her. Before she dies a warrior comes out of nowhere and saves her. He then thus raises her to be a part of his Samurai group that fights for peace and protects the land. Something though in the land is a foot and evil is working with the feudal lords to seize power and take over. The one really bad thing with it all is that Toki is at the front of this Grandmaster's plan. Like I said at the top, the story can be good, but confusing because it ties into Toki's past very oddly without explanation. To be fair I've only watched this one and there could be something that I missed. Other than that the action and the animation style were good and impressive. So, on that basis alone with is worth seeing. 7 out of 10.
User ReviewPinkki JVisually innovative, but that's about it.
