Paste MagazineGraham Techler... yet, by the end of the special, he does somehow position himself (one of the highest-status men in the country) as the lovable low-status pal we'd like him to be.
The Daily DotAudra SchroederApatow is famous enough that he can poke fun at his fame, but he can also revise his history.
GuardianBrian LoganThis all feels a bit mechanical, a problem confounded because this is a very American set, flitting magpie-like between subjects, with no arguments developed, no narrative, and nothing terrifically compelling to say.
User ReviewEd BSurprisingly good! I found myself laughing more than I do with most stand-ups that do it for a living.
User ReviewTim BWhen I saw this special I was in two minds as I find Apatow's films to be fratboy humour, but I love standup and figured I'd give the first 15mins a try and was pleasantly surprised. Sadly there was no laugh out loud moments, but I was entertained and very much enjoyed his stories. I liked that Apatow was prepared to poke fun at himself and that none of his humour stooped to the lowest common denominator. One thing that I immediately noticed is Apatow never once refers to women as girls or females. This is entirely anecdotal, but I have noticed that men who refer to women, as women, truly view us as people, so Apatow went up in my estimation. Those that refer to women as females, subconciously, seek to reduce women as the sum total of their reproductive organs, and referring to women as girls, is just creepy. The fact that Apatow never once does this is a reflection on the man.
User ReviewFred LI'm somebody who regularly laughs at Apatow movies, so I expected his stand up to be pretty funny. It's just not. It's as if some random guy at work who thinks they are kind of witty is doing improv observational comedy.
