Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)Ken HankeFields! Burns and Allen! Lugosi! Cab Calloway! The cast is what makes this silly musical-comedy a joy to behold.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzThere's more misses than hits in this vaudeville-like herky-jerky second-rate project.
User ReviewDennis bFields steals the show, bizarre, funny, catchy music. Shots on gays, sex, pre censorship, love this movie.
User ReviewMichael TRapid-fire comedy (W.C. Fields, Burns & Allen) with musical interludes (Cab Calloway performs "Reefer Man.)
User ReviewMichael HThe plot of the film is just a device for showcasing the top talent of the day - and a lot of it. A mishmash of vaudeville, film, and recording stars with different styles are stitched together in a quilt-work of contemporary entertainment. It's definitely hit and miss but the misses don't last long and some of the hits are pretty darned funny. A great way to sample all these stars in one pretty short movie. I was particularly impressed with Stuart Erwin - not a big name - who played a central role in holding the movie together and who's natural, low key delivery offers some of the best laughs and highlights the difference between the broad, set-up/punchline vaudeville comedy surrounding him and a cinema performance that incorporates the humor within the story and character interactions. A fun movie and a valuable document of the time.
User ReviewTimothy MFields, George & Gracie (and Cab Calloway's music)'s performances have all aged better than the rest of the film.
User ReviewGreg WWC 's first talking pic when he's gone u wish he was back on screen.
User ReviewPrivate UInternational House is a sexist, racist, classist, anarchist, and mildly homophobic insight into 1930s pop culture.
User ReviewJames HLargely unfunny ensamble comedy, noteworthy for coming up with the concept of television six years before it was actually invented. Fields has some good offensive moments, but the majority of the jokes feel like schtick.
