Deseret News (Salt Lake City)Chris HicksThe concentration instead is on soap opera plotting that gets pretty sappy sometimes, as well as thick, torpid dialogue.
Nick's Flick PicksNick DavisThe tendency of Oscar voters toward visual bombast and style-over-substance filmmaking in the English-language categories also applies in the international competition.
Hartford CourantMalcolm JohnsonThis film about the roots of anti-imperialist rebellion moves from the polite tedium of French society to a gripping, revolutionary force.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyA guilty pleasure, this French melodrama could have been called "Saigon, mon amour," a grand, sweeping and sprawling saga about a strong plantation owner (the beautiful Catherine Deneuve)--not unlike Vivien Leigh of Gone With the Wind.
User ReviewPing JAn interesting movie. I know it is a bit sentimental, and it brings tears to my eyes. But I like it.
User ReviewBilly RThis movie was surprisingly good. I didn't know what to expect, but I figure if it won the best foreign film in 1992 it had to be pretty good. It kind of reminded me of A Very Long Engagement meets Memoirs of a Geisha in a way---it was not quite as good as the former, but better than the later.
User ReviewAdam BAn extremely well-crafted film. Subtly explores some of the most prevalents issues in the world. We are invited to try and understand racism, classism, and forbidden love. The plot itself is enough to make this a must-see, but add perfect writing and superb acting and you're good to go. The movie never judges its characters, but allows the viewer to do so for every character we meet. Great French film.
User ReviewLisa Kbreathless! This film makes me miss Indochine.
User ReviewKaarina PExcellently done, of course, the drama is just great, heavy but carried majestically through the visuals, the settings and a good score. A wonderful classic.
User ReviewCathleen OEven at her age in this film, Deneuve is by far at the top of her game. The cinematography is scrumptious!
