In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. "In the Heart of the Sea" reveals the encounter's harrowing aftermath, as the ship's surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

Movie Reviews

Tolucan Times - 9/10 by Tony Medley... filled with tension, fine acting, and eye-popping cinematography...Even better, though, it captures the brutality of whaling, that still goes on today courtesy of the cold-hearted Japanese...While watching this movie, I was rooting for the whale.
Fresno Bee - 9/10 by Rick BentleyHoward charts a dramatic course through a sea of emotional whirlpools, tidal waves of stunning special effects and a steady current provided by the narration.
Dallas Morning News - 9/10 by Chris VognarIn the Heart of the Sea is everything you might expect and a little bit less. It's solid if rarely spectacular, engaging if rarely engrossing.
AV Club - 9/10 by Ignatiy VishnevetskyEven though In The Heart Of The Sea’s framing device often feels like it was written by someone who’d never read a word of Melville, its visual style makes for a bold approximation of his allusive prose.
Blu-ray.com - 9/10 by Brian OrndorfThat the feature is downbeat and periodically meandering isn't really a problem. The real confusion is why Howard felt the need to tell this story in the first place.
The Daily Review/Crikey - 9/10 by Luke BuckmasterOn a purely technical level this is the worst made Hollywood movie in recent memory, astonishingly amateurish for such an accomplished director.
Cine Premiere - 9/10 by Sergio López AguirreAn intense drama with a couple of moments where the actions just drifts away. [Full review in Spanish]
Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 9/10 by Dennis SchwartzIf you don't compare it to the Moby Dick novel, the film is not that bad as a man's survival in nature picture.
Daily Journal (Kankakee, IL) - 9/10 by Pamela PowellHarnessing the ability to portray the brutality of the sea and nature, accompanied by engaging performances from the entire cast, make this film one not to be missed.
Newsday - 9/10 by Rafer GuzmanRon Howard's grand maritime adventure has spectacular effects, literary polish and just the right touch of modern-day relevance.
