Movie BoeufDavid N. ButterworthRichard Shepard's loving, 39-minute tribute to the influential performer who was taken from us all too soon.
New York PressLeslie StonebrakerThe film is as bright and largely superficial as the DVD's Oscilloscope packaging.
User ReviewSylvie AWonderful moving tribute. Also check special features for extended interview with Al Pacino. Great actor gone far too soon
User ReviewDavid PNot in a billion years would I have ever guessed that I would love a movie in which that hack Bret Ratner was involved with. He produced it. But what an amazing actor & an all too brief career! I didn't know about his great romance with Meryl Streep either. My only complaint is that Netflix would have you believe that the documentary is 1 hour & 43 minutes long. Maybe with the extended interviews and a couple of the other extras make it that running time.
User ReviewKen SIt is crazy he was only in 5 movies and they are all classics!
User ReviewRodney EIt's strange to imagine what kind of career John Cazale would have had if he lived on like DeNiro or Pacino. Still it is amazing and facinating how every single movie he appeared in are classics.
User ReviewIan GIt's always great see something about this unforgettable unknown soldier of the cinema.
User ReviewMichael CJohn Cazale only acted in 5 films. So why even bother making a documentary about the guy? Well, when those 5 films are The Godfather, The Godfather Part 2, Dog Day AFternoon, The Deer Hunter, and the Conversation, it's probably reasonable that people are interested in your career choices. Cazale was an actor's actor, a consummate professional who could express crushing vulnerability with a glance and slight expressions. This documentary takes the viewer through Cazale's claim to fame in Godfather, to his final role in the Deer Hunter, as well as his love affair with Meryl Streep that only ended in his death. Though rather brief, it works because Cazale's career was brief itself, and it gives you a portrait of an actor that likely would have continued to do outstanding work had cancer not claimed him at such a young age.
User ReviewMartin KSomewhat shallow (Cazale's early life and theatre career are barely touched) but never less than enjoyable tribute to the little-known giant of 70s cinema. Almost all the interviews from his costars have value; from Richard Dreyfuss making you really look at Fredo's eyes to Gene Hackman (always welcome) coming out of retirement to explain where his moments of anger really came from in 'The Conversation'. The contemporary actors explaining how Cazale inspired them are also well chosen, with Buscemi perhaps the most obvious heir to the throne ("funny looking" is even used to describe Cazale at one point!). Most affecting though is Streep, who was involved with Cazale at the time of his death and describes these months in sometimes heart-breaking detail. An enjoyable 40 minutes in all and while I'm glad that it doesn't drag on too much, I'm sure it could've stood to make it to the full hour...
User ReviewRaf TA look at legendary actor (gone too soon) John Cazale. The iconic actor whose name we never seem to know but who's face is as recognizable as any of the greats. Having only appeared in five films, all five of which went on to be be nominated for best picture, John Cazale was as much a part of 70's stardom as Al Pacino (who he starred alongside in The Godfather 1 and 2 and Dog Day Afternoon) and Robert De Niro (co-star in Godfather 2 and The Deer Hunter). This documentary looks back on the life and career of Cazale (more often remembered as Freido for his role in the Godfather movies) with interviews from Pacino, De Niro, Gene Hackman, Meryl Streep, Francis Ford Coppola, and Sidney Lumet.
