Full Plot Details

After a seven month long passion-filled courtship, thirty-something Londoners Natasha Redford and Josh Moss get married despite they being mismatched in personality and temperament, something that their closest friends and family members can see - some who predict the marriage won't last a year - even if Nat and Josh themselves don't see it. Nat, a marketing company manager, is more professional and controlled. Josh, a novelist with a current case of writer's block, is more carefree and childlike. Nine months into their marriage, Nat and Josh have their first session with arguably the most distracted marriage counselor in the city, that session which may be the deciding factor in whether they continue in being husband and wife to each other. Their issues over the preceding nine months are told in flashback, and include little idiosyncrasies which annoy the other, and tensions with each's in-laws, beyond the general differences in their personalities. But what may be the biggest threat to a happily-ever-after for them as a couple may be temptations with others to who, at least on paper, each is more well suited. For Nat, that temptation is client Guy Harrap, an American manufacturer who, unknown to Nat, hired her firm solely in his personal attraction to her. For Josh, that temptation is his old girlfriend Chloe, an aide worker who only recently reentered his life after a four year stint away working in Africa, the two of them in theory never having really broken up in the first place.

Movie Reviews

ColeSmithey.com - 9/10 by Cole Smithey[VIDEO ESSAY] As a premise, a doomed marriage sounds like a no-brainer: you can pile on outrageous episodes of slapstick, physical comedy and biting wit. Unfortunately, "I Give It a Year" is a no-brainer.
The Film Stage - 8/10 by Jared MobarakClumsy and cute - that's my concise review of regular Sacha Baron Cohen collaborator Dan Mazer's directorial debut I Give It a Year.
AV Club - 8/10 by Mike D'AngeloThat Mazer succeeds in playing this for laughs — however sporadic — rather than as a kitchen-sink downer is an achievement in itself.
Compuserve - 8/10 by Harvey S. KartenMore a comedy than a romantic tale, this movie is decked out with hilarious side roles.
TheFilmFile.com - 8/10 by Dustin PutmanSplendidly pert dialogue, laugh-out-loud situations, and an ensemble of ready and willing performers combine to ultimately give "I Give It a Year" the volt of electricity it needs to keep from becoming familiar and obvious.
The Ooh Tray - 8/10 by Ed WhitfieldI only wish this review could have had a happier ending.
Financial Times - 8/10 by Nigel AndrewsMazer has an unsparing skill at pushing comic situations to the pain barrier and beyond.
Digital Spy - 8/10 by Emma DibdinAnybody familiar with London will appreciate Mazer's anti-Curtis approach to the city, more Soho than South Bank, but regardless of region it's hard to resist I Give It a Year's spiky charms.
San Francisco Chronicle - 8/10 by Leba HertzA smart farce that would make Hugh Grant and his fans proud.
New York Daily News - 8/10 by Jordan HoffmanI Give It a Year has all the outrageous, embarrassment-based moments you’d expect from one of the creators of “Borat.” Indeed this film has one of the best charades gags ever. But there’s plenty of sweetness and charm, too. You root for both bride and groom, and cheer when they finally say, “I don’t.”
