On their son Odell's 13th birthday, graphic artist Tom Warszaw finally confesses to his wife why he fled Greenwich Village, NYC for Paris when he was that age. As a schoolboy, naturally sensitive, considerate Tommy's best buddy was 'adult' half-wit Pappass, Father Duncan's Catholic School's assistant janitor. Smothered by his dependent mother, a mute orderly, Tommy got 'parental advice' from a women's-prison inmate. Together with Pappas, he saves up tips from their butchery delivery rounds. One night, Pappas steals the bike they were saving for. Tommy tries to take the blame, but ends up expelled as if he had been the instigator. Even more tragic consequences follow.

EricDSnider.com - 9/10 by Eric D. SniderNot only does Robin Williams play a retarded man with fake teeth, but he also gets to wear old-age makeup. It's the schmaltz trifecta!
Reeling Reviews - 9/10 by Laura CliffordDuchovny overreaches with his first film, but he does achieve several lovely small moments when he's not directing himself.
Blunt Review - 9/10 by Emily BluntThere's a new young star in-the-making named Anton Yelchin, awaiting your perusal in this touching film...
Now Playing Magazine - 8/10 by Brent SimonA loose-knit coming-of-age tale for which perhaps the best word is baffling...
One Guy's Opinion - 8/10 by Frank SwietekThe 'D' in the title indicates not just its would-be auteur's name, but also the grade the movie deserves.
Dallas Morning News - 7/10 by Philip WuntchThe film never sidesteps the puddles of self-indulgence that soil many feature-length directorial debuts, particularly those of an autobiographical nature.
Bangitout.com - 7/10 by Jordan HillerDavid Duchovny's first stab at writing and directing takes him to a place close to his heart - the New York of his youth.
Movie Mom - 7/10 by Nell MinowCluttered, overly plotted and too much is too easily resolved. As sincere an effort as it is, it would take a much better script to overcome all of that.
FilmJerk.com - 7/10 by Brian OrndorfIt's a heartfelt production, and a tough one to kick around, but to recommend it on intentions alone would be making many innocent people suffer.
Palo Alto Weekly - 7/10 by Jeanne AufmuthA mawkish coming-of-age tale that relies on melodramatic theatrics.
