Senses of Cinema - 7/10 by David CairnsHouse by the River is a gothic melodrama, and it marshals its limited resources to create a rich and pervasive atmosphere of decay and corruption.
Village Voice - 6/10 by Michael AtkinsonIts 85 minutes stuffed with shadowy menace, odd magical-realisms (what is it with the jumping fish?), and effortless tension, House by the River is quintessential Lang.
User Review - 8/10 by Carolyn FThe murderer gets creepier and creepier as the film continues.
User Review - 8/10 by Robert PGreat use of symbols and imagery in a dark gothic murder mystery. Influential but now familiar arena for the viewer as we track the undulating fortunes of an accidental killer who tries to conceal his crime. Interesting early introduction of a writer gaining inspiration and titilation from real life crime, reminiscent of the lead murderer in Rope. Some to-be-exptected deft touches from a master film maker but somehow feels lesser than earlier German based movies like M or Spies. A great study in evil from the lead character
User Review - 8/10 by Matt GA novelist, played by Louis Hayward, murders his young housekeeper in a fit of lustful rage, then, with the reluctant aid of his older brother (Lee Bowman) tosses the body into the river that runs behind his palatial estate. Relegated to working at cheapie-studio Republic Pictures, director Fritz Lang once again proves that he can create extraordinary mood and suspense (with the aid of cinematographer Edward Cronjager's absolutely stunning images of stark shadows and light) with or without a budget. The picture is more concerned with latent and suppressed eroticism (and, if Lang had had his way, interracial lust, for the director had originally envisioned the role of the murdered maid to be played by an African-American actress until the studio brass nixed that idea) than the more obvious themes of guilt or morality; and Lang's running visual motifs (running water and flowing curtains that resemble the dead girl's hair) and hints of revenge from beyond the grave are very reminiscent of Italian director Mario Bava's great neglected Gothic melodrama The Whip and the Body.
User Review - 8/10 by Jack Gitching to have bigger stars (seriously, where are Orson Welles and Gregory Peck when you need em?), but in its own B-movie dimensions it works well, even with an ending that is hilariously stupid.
User Review - 8/10 by Ilsa LVery solid thriller on a shoestring budget. Louis Hayward is the standout in this as Stephen Byrne, the aspiring novelist and womaniser.
User Review - 8/10 by Patryk CHouse by the River is one of those noir movies that perfectly fit into the horror genre. Its sombre atmosphere, macabre feel, use of light and shady cinematography compose a masterful amount of greatly thrilling and scary sensations. Stephen Byrne murders his maid, and then asks his brother John for help with burying the body in the nearby river. After a series of accidents, its John who's blamed for the girl's death. What's more, Stephen is perfectly ok with that and even starts to write a book about this horrifying case. Its a good brother vs. evil brother showcase of the most electrifying kind. Fritz Lang's under-appreciated work.
