Van Van Horn lives on High Tor, overlooking the Hudson River, where he enjoys an idyllic labor-free life. His girl Judith wants him to sell his mountain to mining interests so she and he can have a substantial life together. He refuses, despite the unscrupulous entreaties of the mining company and their monetary offerings. Judith leaves him. That night he is visited by the ghosts of a 300-year-old Dutch sailing crew.
