This is a story about grief and all the emotions it entails. A successful businessman attempting to resurrect his life buys and boards a dilapidated sailboat in a remote area on the shore of one of the Great Lakes, North America. A business associate comes to urge him to return to work, but relents when he sees his state. This is when viewers get more of a hint of the tragedy that he has experienced. Rather than push him further, the associate agrees to let him take all the time he needs. He passes the winter in this desolate location grieving desperately and gradually repairing the boat though other boaters have left for the winter. In the meantime, he makes friends of a widower sailor and a world-weary waitress at the marina. Through the slow moving yet beautiful and well played drama in this gorgeous lake setting, viewers come to know how he has reached this point in his life. By the early spring, he is feeling stronger and is ready to face society again. He sells the sailboat, now in excellent condition, and says good-bye to this episode of his life.

Movie Reviews

Movieline - 6/10 by Alison WillmoreIt's a slender story of mourning that manages some lovely bits of mood while also being dreary and a little preposterous in its spareness.
Big Hollywood - 6/10 by Christian TotoJosh Lucas drinks, bats his watery eyes and stares into space for nearly 90 minutes in Hide Away. And yet somehow the actor overshadows the obvious life lessons that threaten to sink the project at every turn.
Village Voice - 6/10 by Eric HynesThe film stays afloat, if barely, thanks to Elliot Davis's uncluttered camerawork, a surprisingly unsentimental denouement, and performers who deftly undersell the script's corniest pretensions.
Movie Nation - 6/10 by Roger MooreBeautifully shot, elegantly acted melodrama of the sailboating cure for what ails you.
Los Angeles Times - 5/10 by Sheri LindenThis quiet, atmospheric drama (originally titled "A Year in Mooring") feels padded even in its brief running time; it's a slight mood piece posing as a character study.
Time Out - 4/10 by Keith UhlichThis is a man-versus-nature parable heavy on the sappy existentialism that's very much of our time. Call it Nicholas Sparks's The Grey.
The New York Times - 4/10 by Stephen HoldenMuch of the skimpy, waterlogged dialogue in Peter Vanderwall's screenplay is heavy with portent. Excerpts from Homer's "Odyssey" and Longfellow's "Children's Hour" add to the tonnage.
Denver Post - 4/10 by Lisa KennedyA tactile, emotion-laden world of beauty, loss, recovery.
New York Daily News - 4/10 by Joe NeumaierThe film doesn't play games; it's basically just Lucas going through a short story-like period of reflection and redemption almost entirely without dialogue. It's not enough, but it is what this underappreciated actor does best.
Slant Magazine - 4/10 by Bill WeberA banal "poetic" drama of a grieving stranger licking his wounds in a bayside Michigan town.
