Full Plot Details

Ying Ke-Feng, head of Peerless Manor, is an expert swordsman whose escort business transports 200,000 taels of silver to the capital each year. This year, however, he is afflicted with an infirmity that renders him unable to use his sword. Rather than give up this important commission and let the martial world know of his precarious health he means to entrust the consignment to two young knights in his manor, Hsiang Ting and Yun Piao-Piao. As it happens, these two are also betrothed; clearly they have their swordsmanship in common. At Peerless Manor, everyone is suspicious of malevolent strangers who may be sniffing around the silver transport. So when Le I appears astride a high-quality charger but otherwise clearly down on his luck, Hsiang Ting thinks Le I may be a spy for the bad guys in the Flying Tiger Manor. It doesn't help that Le I and Yun Piao-Piao hit it off right away. Even or especially when Le I saves Yun Piao-Piao from a Flying Tiger thug, Hsiang is not assuaged. Yun Piao-Piao is torn, though it seems that a certain sisterly compassion finally wins the day when she arranges to reunite Le I with his horse. It's a cute horse, and Le I seems rather attached ... When the silver convoy passes by a pagoda that happens to house the Flying Tiger gang, Chiao Hung, the Flying Tiger chief, tries to steal the shipment. To win the day, Hsiang and Le must fight together, despite their mutual disaffection.

Movie Reviews

User Review - 10/10 by Rachel Ndespite quite a bit of awkwardness and imperfection, it's still one of my most favourite movies of all time... it's very simple, very understated and very beautiful.
User Review - 10/10 by Steve WI am a Shaw Brothers-fan since years and own many of their newly remastered films on DVD. The most are from the 70s and the story is often thin, the fight scenes are sometimes unspectacular, but THIS one beats them all. Likable, heroic characters played by Ti Lung (the badass) and Li Ching (both kick asses, also the woman), a stranger, a Clint Eastwood-esque guy played by David Chiang, the plot twists and shots of blood spurting, dying enemies in slow-motion make this movie so great. "Have Sword, Will Travel" is one of the first (1969) and one of the best Wuxia Eastern films ever. Wuxia is the combination of heroic characters, warriors, a beautiful landscape (set), an adventurous story with flying (wirework), jumping (trampoline) characters (like "Hero", "House of flying Daggers", "Grouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") and many artistic scenes / shots in slow-motion. The characters and sets in this movie are great, overall it's amazing, especially the bloody and totally unexpected finale in the pagoda, this is chinese cinema at it's best! Many of the best Martial Arts films were made in the 60s, back then they used gallons and gallons of fake blood and turned the brutal killings of many many enemies into art. The fight scenes are very well made, brutal and gory and not cheesy at all (like in the late 70s). I will not post any spoilers here (regarding the story) because fans of Martial Arts films and the Shaw Brothers should check this out. A Shaw Bros Wuxia masterpiece, a definite must see! (10/10)
User Review - 8/10 by Thom SWho can resist a film with coconut hoof noises and subtitles that make no sense. I really can't
User Review - 8/10 by Neil DI loved watching this! - both audiovisuals, the storyline and fighting scenes are pretty superb. The ending was slightly protracted perhaps, but no big deal.
User Review - 8/10 by Jeremy PThis was like Chang Cheh's "jumping" movie. There are just a ton of shots of guys jumping in all sorts of ways, often in slow motion and off spring boards located just off camera. It also has this old western or samurai theme about a hero who doesn't want anything, at all, except a place to sleep, and ends up misunderstood by everyone else. Of course since this loner is played by David Chiang he was the highlight of the movie. Ti Lung really annoyed me for playing such an ass, but he was still great in the fight scenes. It's also pretty bloody in some often poorly edited ways, but I find that sort of stuff forgivable. The ending is really long and drawn out (post-fighting) but appropriate.
User Review - 8/10 by David WCheh Chang, Shaw Brothers Studio's best known and most prolific film director, with such films as the Five Deadly Venoms and One-Armed Swordsman. Chang was a pioneer of what is known by some as "heroic bloodshed"; films that emphasize brotherhood, loyalty and honor. In Have Sword Will Travel he tries to create a love triangle between Siang (Ti Lung), his fellow master fighter and fiancée (Li Ching) and David Chiang's character. The bloody climatic battle in an a tower is not to be missed!
User Review - 6/10 by Virgil Bthis movie was odd, it was a lot more like a certain type of japenese samuri movie than a chinese kung fu movie. the pacing was somewhat akward but in spite of everything i actually kind of liked this movie.
User Review - 6/10 by Alexia Cstory is somewhat boring and predictable... otherwise I like the photography and martial art direction
User Review - 6/10 by Adriano BThe most unlucky swordsman in history becomes entangled in a plot of jelousy, violence and deception-and the gal isn not that nice... A martial art western not too well aged, except for the fascinating final battle in the dark, towering pagoda, where climbing and descending stairs symbolyze the high and lows of life, despite merits. Blasted money!
User Review - 4/10 by Scott RThis one had its moments, but ultimately was a run of the mill for me. I got frustrated with the motivations not making sense.
