A powerful documentary that exposes the direct connection between the long history of U.S. intervention in Latin America and the immigration crisis we face today. From the territorial expansionist policies that decimated the young economies of Mexico, Puerto Rico and Cuba, to the covert operations that imposed oppressive military regimes in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador, Harvest of Empire provides an unflinching look at the origins of the growing Latino presence in the United States. Adapted from the landmark book written by journalist Juan Gonzalez, the film tells the story of an epic human saga that is largely unknown to the great majority of citizens in the U.S., but must become part of our national conversation about immigration.

Movie Reviews

San Francisco Chronicle - 8/10 by Peter HartlaubAs entertainment, this approach might be questionable. As a service, it would be valuable.
Washington Post - 8/10 by Stephanie MerryThe stories grow more eye-opening as filmmakers Peter Getzels and Eduardo Lopez paint a recurring picture.
New York Daily News - 8/10 by Elizabeth WeitzmanIn an era of anti-immigrant fervor, this sobering and much-needed look at Latino migration is built on an undeniably optimistic premise: that once Americans have accurate facts, "they rarely allow injustices to stand."
Arizona Republic - 7/10 by Kerry LengelAs an analysis of the causes of migration, it is one-dimensional and unconvincing. But as a social history of Latinos in America, it is provocative and fascinating. And as an indictment of decades of economic injustice and covert military action committed in the name of freedom, it is devastating.
The New York Times - 7/10 by Rachel SaltzThe filmmakers retain a touching faith that most Americans won't tolerate injustice when they know about it. This film is meant to teach them.
The Hollywood Reporter - 6/10 by Frank ScheckCogent documentary makes the persuasive argument for the role that U.S. military and corporate interests have played in the influx of immigration from Latin American countries.
Los Angeles Times - 6/10 by Sheri LindenThough its snapshot approach is uneven, Harvest is itself a valuable resource: a good starting point for a fuller perspective on this nation of immigrants.
Village Voice - 6/10 by Michael NordineHarvest of Empire is never quite wrong, but it's effectiveness is inversely proportional to how hard it's trying.
User Review - 10/10 by Elise MIt really makes you see how connected everything is and the cnsequences of the decisions of the past...
User Review - 10/10 by Diego FThis is a great movie!! It not only shows where Latin Immigrants have come from, why they left their countries and their impact on this country. A must watch for anyone connected to Latinos.
