Peace in 17th-century Japan causes the Shogunate's breakup of warrior clans, throwing thousands of samurai out of work and into poverty. An honorable end to such fate under the samurai code is ritual suicide, or hara-kiri (self-inflicted disembowelment). An elder warrior, Hanshiro Tsugumo (Tatsuya Nakadai) seeks admittance to the house of a feudal lord to commit the act. There, he learns of the fate of his son-in-law, a young samurai who sought work at the house but was instead barbarically forced to commit traditional hara-kiri in an excruciating manner with a dull bamboo blade. In flashbacks the samurai tells the tragic story of his son-in-law, and how he was forced to sell his real sword to support his sick wife and child. Tsugumo thus sets in motion a tense showdown of revenge against the house.

Movie Reviews

ReelTalk Movie Reviews - 10/10 by Donald J. LevitThe 1962 single masterpiece uses ploys of the written word in picturing the past and/or far away to criticize the present.
RogerEbert.com - 10/10 by Roger EbertIt would be wrong for me to reveal the details of the story Tsugumo tells. What I can say is that it is heartbreaking.
The Movie Sleuth - 10/10 by Michelle KisnerBoth a thrilling character piece and a scathing take down of authority, Harakiri is a tour-de-force and a compelling look into the facade of institutions.
User Review - 10/10 by Sidney WWatched Masaki Kobayahi's "Harakiri" (1962) last night, which is available in a Criterion edition. The set-up is that a down-and-out ronin shows up at an estate and asks to kill himself in their courtyard, a kind of backhanded way of asking for a handout. But it's soon clear that something else is up. It's a samurai movie that questions the samurai tradition. As our hero, Hanshiro argues, "Samurai honor is a facade." Yet, of course, he's quite the samurai. It's wonderfully acted and directed, great cinematography and writing (I believe it's by the author of "Rashomon").
User Review - 10/10 by Robyn CAmazingly gripping, moving and inspiring tale of early Edo period Japan. Kobayashi is a social critic and really skewers the hypocrisy of the shogunate of the time. Nakadai forever!
User Review - 10/10 by Cibi KTop class movie for samurai history fans!
User Review - 10/10 by Jason SThe first 3/4ths of the film is told through engaging flashbacks, both reality and memories swept along with an abundance of tracking shots and excitingly timed zooms. The story is revealed subtly, one point at a time, until the stakes are understood and the drama has peaked. Then, badass samurai fighting time. All capped off with eerie end cinematography and the profound knowledge that all of what you saw and loved had NO significance in the long run. How perfect is this film?
User Review - 10/10 by Jared Bastonishing. I've watched it nearly 10 times and it keeps getting better
User Review - 10/10 by Jason LQuintessential samurai movie, though with barely any swordplay. The moral debate that shapes the story left me with a lot to think about, esp. as I gauged my shifting reactions to the characters as the plot unspooled.
User Review - 10/10 by Robert POriginal and commpelling suspense samurai drama. Seminal statement on honour and commitment
