They call him "Handsome" Harry Sweeney. At 52, the Vietnam veteran has kept his rugged good looks. Everyone likes Harry, an electrician by trade who loves to sing but for some reason he never lets anyone get too close. He's been divorced for a long time, has a son whom he rarely sees, and, although he's engaged in a long-term flirtation with the waitress at the diner, seems destined to remain alone. One day, Harry gets a call from a former Navy buddy, Tom Kelly, whom he hasn't seen in some thirty years. On his deathbed and terrified of going to Hell, Kelly convinces Harry to seek forgiveness on his behalf from a comrade they betrayed long ago, David Kagan. At first, Harry wants nothing to do with Kelly, Kagan or the remnants of his murky past. But guilt and memories have a mysterious grasp on Harry, and he finally relents, driving down the East Coast to call on his old comrades. As he confronts the three other men involved in a long-ago crime, he observes how each man has dealt with his own guilt. The rugged Rheems hides behind righteous moral posturing and economic success. The intellectual Porter has divorced himself from the violent implications of his past in the military. Soft-spoken Gephardt has turned to Jesus. Though they've all grown older, it is unclear whether any of them have really found salvation. As the road stretches out before Harry, two mysteries gradually unfold: what really happened on that night thirty years ago, and the mystery of what it has meant to Harry and how it has shaped his life ever since. It is only through confronting the events of the distant past, and finally confronting David himself, that Harry can begin to truly live again.

Movie Reviews

Hollywood Reporter - 9/10 by Luke SaderA slight story with little action, this rueful dissection of male bonding builds to an undeniably emotional last act.
Newsweek - 8/10 by Jennie Yabroff... it's nice to see men even acknowledging the fact that they are no more impervious to the effects of time than women, and far preferable to watching actors seeming not to notice that their female costars are now young enough to be their granddaughters.
Hollywood & Fine - 8/10 by Marshall FineWhile it jumps the rails at a couple of different points dramatically, Handsome Harry keeps winning you back because of Jamey Sheridan's performance.
Los Angeles Times - 8/10 by Kevin ThomasGordon's way with actors and with screen storytelling is as impeccable as ever.
NewsBlaze - 8/10 by Prairie MillerDespite superb performances, the film feels like an unconvincing, self-conscious narrative agenda created to scold just about everyone on and off screen for bad behavior. Along with a nearly anthropological indictment of the heterosexual male species.
Film Journal International - 8/10 by David NohBette Gordon's film is that rarity these days, an American film which deals with mature characters facing life and the choices they've made, possessed of uncommon intelligence and subtlety.
Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) - 8/10 by John BeifussI don't think Clint Eastwood would cast himself as a gay man, but it's easy to imagine an alternate movie universe in which Eastwood not only plays the title role but is the director of this earnest yet unstrident drama...
New York Press - 6/10 by Armond WhiteDirector Bette Gordon presents the actors' sensitivity with tactful insight and appreciation reminiscent of Katherine Dieckmann's very fine Diggers.
America Magazine - 6/10 by John AndersonWhile Bette Gordon may be a filmmaker of daring and a painterly hand, the eternal truths of Handsome Harry are finally what hold us.
New York Times - 5/10 by Stephen HoldenA powerfully acted but strident road movie.
