Movie Reviews

Film Threat - 6/10 by Bobby LePireSince the movie hinges the crux of its emotional weight onto such a dull, uninspired sequence, it seems pointless. A maddening, inane affair that is pretty to look at.
Gay Essential - 6/10 by Alexander RyllA majestic, all-embracing account of how a vulnerable young boy learns to glibly mold his childhood suffering into art, tenderness and creative literature.
User Review - 10/10 by Cameron MGenuine performances and beautifully executed-this film is an experience. The viewer is immersed in a story that becomes surprisingly relatable as this film holds a steady gait and yet meanders exquisitely when it needs to. An amazing art piece.
User Review - 10/10 by Camille CThis is a beautiful, powerful, captivating film. The performances are top notch, especially Patricia Velasquez and Alexander Greymon. And of course, Luke Judy who plays the child. It was amazing to me how so much could be said with so few words. The direction is excellent. I love how the director made the poetry so fluid and natural, a difficult feat for an actor. The CINEMATOGRAPHY is awe INSPIRING. I enjoy black & White films, and this one really stands out. The right audience member fill find this film a gem, the wrong one won't get it.
User Review - 10/10 by Melinda HThis exceptional film had a tremendous impact on me. Not only is this film a cathartic experience to anyone who has suffered childhood abuse but the take-away is that forgiveness must be the last piece of healing. Powerful performances make this a film you cannot take your eyes off of. The poetry is thoroughly entertaining and thought provoking. The film keeps you thinking long past leaving the theater. Vasquez brings a humanity to her character that invokes equal parts rage and empathy from the viewer. Impressive film from Hughes. I look forward to his next project.
User Review - 10/10 by D VI love poetry and I love movies, but I wasn't sure if they would go together very well. I think this movie did a really great job making poetry cinematic and the story itself was gripping and unusual. At first, my brain was working on overdrive to try to put it all together, then I kind of just relaxed and went with the flow of the film and really enjoyed it. It's like watching a symbolic dream that doesn't all make sense right away. This is not a movie to watch while texting or doing other stuff - it requires your full attention for sure because of all the twists and turns and going back and forth in time and from a real world to an imaginary one. It's also not the right movie to watch when you're in a happy mood. But if you're in the mood for a darker film and you're open-minded, I def think it is a very worthwhile movie. Alexander Dreymon - the dad - is particularly good.
User Review - 10/10 by James PAt once a dream, a mystery thriller, a tail of crushing abuse and human resilience, the beguiling film "Guys Reading Poems" defies easy classification. Rendered in sumptuous black and white, Hunter Lee Hughes' film weaves together poetry from Blake and Wordsworth to contemporary poets with engrossing cinematography to tell the story of young boy who experiences first the breakup of his parents' marriage and then the trauma of being locked in a box as part of his mother's avant-garde art performance. While the boy is the victim of one artist, Hughes' artistry gives us hope that art can be a path to survival and redemption that often seems absent in a cruel world.
User Review - 10/10 by Angie WGuys Reading Poems coalesces beautiful graceful cinematography, stunning poetry, powerful acting, and a compelling storyline within the parameters of a black-and-white film by which a young boy is locked in a puppet box as his disturbed mother creates an art installation around his imprisonment. The fact that Hughes is able to accomplish these things with such a dark subject matter and a limited setting is a feat in and of itself. But he goes beyond that feat by imbuing his film with soulful meaning and metaphor, as the guys reading poetry function as fragments of the boy's psyche, as well as shards of his eloquent imagination. This is a film about the human spirit's will to not only survive but heal. When the boy finally confronts his mother as a young man, he steps from his imaginative realm into the gritty bare space of realism, and Hughes handles this with aplomb in both the characters' interactions and the break from silence into the spoken word, as a majority of the film is narrated through spoken poetry. It's worth mentioning that Hughes also delivers two original poems during the film that hit all the right notes in terms of impact. In summation, Guys Reading Poems will leave you wondering, feeling, and marveling long after its viewing. It is an innovative film of rare beauty and heart. See it!
