Grown Up Movie Star tells the story of disgraced NHL star Ray and his precocious daughters Ruby and Rose. Once the town hero, Ray has returned home to Newfoundland from the US following a drug conviction, only to have his wife Lillian leave him for another man and aspirations of stardom. With Lillian gone, Ray flails from woman to woman trying to find a replacement for her, while struggling against a growing awareness of his homosexuality. At loose ends for lack of guidance, Ruby is becoming increasingly curious about her own sexuality and, in a desperate plea for attention, putting herself in increasingly risky situations. Ruby begins spending more and more time with Ray's best friend Stuart, confined to a wheelchair following an accident involving Ray. When Stuart finds himself attracted to Ruby, dangerously motivated by fear and anger, he leads the three of them towards a heartbreaking conclusion.

Jam! MoviesKevin WilliamsonGrown Up Movie Star is unruly, tortured, crisis-prone, nervy, melodramatic and just charming enough to make you forgive all of the above. It's like a teenager that way.
Globe and MailLiam LaceyGrown Up Movie Star is an awkward mixture of an emotionally intimate coming-of-age story and contrived serio-comic plotting.
User ReviewBruce WAnother one of those wonderful "indie flicks". Watch for Tatiana Maslany, a superb young talent. Excellent writing, acting, and a charming Newfoundland locale make for an enjoyable 90 minute peek into a few lives on "the rock". Recommended !!
User ReviewDor Dbest film of the 2010 sundance film festival. must-see!
User ReviewCatherine MThis brilliant ensemble cast is led by Tatiana Maslany as teenage Ruby, and each performance is rich and complex, walking a very fine line of morality. There are some incredibly disturbing themes explored here, but it's all done with integrity. The Toronto International Film Festival should be ashamed for turning this flick down. Congratulations to Sundance for giving it a chance.
